had my 90 si d15b hatch emission tested today. first time since the swap. well after finally finding someone who knew how to drive a damn stick shift (3 test sites later) whattya know, it failed! high hydrocarbon and nitrogen levels..didnt fail by much , only like 20 points over standard. what could cause this? o2 sensor maybe? perhaps my timing is off a lil on the dizzy? any suggestions would help

ive been drivin this hatch since april '07. my plates are due halloween this year..couldnt be the cat its brand new just installed it with the cat back like 6 months ago. and no cel either. one thing i have noticed is my air/fuel ratio guage isnt as active as it once was. i rarelt see it sweeping from lean to rich as i drive..im thinkin its the o2..hopefully
 
I had to replace my O2 sensor and play with the ignition timing to get my car to pass. Start with that and see if it works...
 
It could be your o2 sensor but how long has it been since you did a tune up. I had to take mine 4 times and 2 different engines to get it to pass. I then just did a oil change, plugs wires and set my timing and viola it passed without any issues.
 
beat the absolute piss out of your car for an hour before you bring it in. get that cat stupid hot.

leave the car running until they take it in.

i bet you'll meet the 20 points right there.
 
the plan for round #2 is new o2 sensor, adjust timing if need be, and a can of sea foam...oh and a good long drive on tha highway..
 
yea...strike #2 it failed again. readings actually got worse this time wtf!! went up 10 points..arrgghhh! new 02 and plugs..man how the hell am i gonna get the b16 to pass if the d is a PITA
 
run a bottle of the highest % rubbing alcohol..but also be sure to fill up the gas tank after you put it in..run the car really hard,and do just as B said
 
I went through the same trouble with my zc. Did tune up played with timing timing tried additives. The thing I did to make it pass was retard the timing almost to the end of the slots on the distributor. After doing this my car was very sluggish bad on fuel. The car was guttless until about 4000rpms . But it passed with good numbers, so I got my sticker advanced the timing and it returned to life.

thats exactly whut i need to do is choke off some fuel to lower the hydro carbons. what readings were high with the zc?? im high on hyrdocarbon and nitrogen. both are bout the same level above standard. with a dx i had i just pulled a vaccum line from the butterfly on the mani and that choked enuff fuel to pass it. to retard timing the dizzy slides towards the bumper right? or towards the firewall?
 
its most likely your O2 .. had trouble passing too.. the hydrocarbon reading kept getting higher, so i took it to get a diagnostic done and it was the o2
 
pcv valve? try running some seafoam through your motor...


tried the seafoam....down only 9 points. but the pcv valve is on the list for tommorrow. plugs, wires, and a retarding of the iginition. come monday moring i better have new plates on my car lol
 
Since its a swap you should be allowed to run it as a hotrod since its not the "original engine", meaning your limits can be much higher. I got mine done at Honda and thats what they did. I had a bad ecu wire that kept cutting off the number 3 piston as well, all the extra fuel burnt out the cat so they fixed the wire and got a new cheap cat, passed like pie.
 
you live in Canada though right.. we cant do shit like that here
