ok so I've done alot of searching but can't find the answer i'm looking for. My friend and I can't figure out what the difference is between vtec and non-vtec valve springs are. could one put vtec (b-series) springs into a non-vtec(b-series) engine? why or why not? I know the vtec engine revs higher then non-vtec and theres more stress on the head, could one put vtec aftermarket springs into a non-vtec engine to aid on the stress at running at higher rpms/ help from throwing a valve or timming belt? I know how to put engines together and get them running but when it comes to the tech parts I don't get it all the time.:confused:

Am I the only one confused here? I've got a b16 valve spring that looks alike(b18b) but is it the same? The question stands! like chest are we at a stand-still, oblivious to what the outcome might be?
 
if nobody has posted yet then my guess is that nobody knows,,which would also mean it probably isnt the same
 
check the honda parts catalog part numbers, that will be your answer.
 
atleast someone posted thank you but isn't this a question for us all? I just want to know the difference? If b16 or b18c valve springs can prevent damage in a high-revving non-vtec engine would this not be great or what?
 
Or it could create damage if too much resistance is applied. Gotta find the happy medium

The springs work with tension values, so the answer is that the vtec is made to rev higher rpms and the springs were design to give the right tension to the cams, but the the non vtec springs where not design to do that amount of work as the vtec type springs, so if you where to put the vtec springs on the non vtec head there is a chance you might damage the cams. Now you can look into this more i might be wrong, how ever you can measure the height of the springs and see if they are the same height , then measure the spacing between each coil turn on the spring and see if they are the same and then you can also check the tension between the springs with the right tool not your hand.......and you should get the answer there as well. Or look into the manual and see if they give the spec break down on the spring as someone else mension before to you. Well good luck hope i was able to help you on this......
 
How the metal was tempered also affects it. You can have the same size/amount of coils but if the metal were to have a different molecular structure it can have more or less tension.

Putting vtec springs on stock non-vtec cams are a waste. You would not want to rev the stock non-vtec cams any higher since the powerband doesn't even exist up there.
 
Why dont you just buy aftermarket springs for your motor?
 
It's not the fact of buying aftermarket springs or not, It was just something my freind and I were talking about and didn't understand the difference between the both but however some really good facts have been brought up. We were just thinking of instead of hunting down non-vtec springs when it seems that vtec are more abondant that why they wouldn't swap, thats all.
 
so what i would do is take some nonvtec springs and some vtecsprings and check all the specs on them,tension,the rate,all that..

I say it's a waste of time. If they were truly interchangeable Honda would have used the same product in both. Different P/N, different products, made for different applications. And really just not worth the time when after market ones are not very expensive.
