i was in class a few weeks ago when my teacher was talking about our dodge ram pickup which has like 400whp and he said in 4wd allmost 10,000 ft/lbs. and i get the idea for a supercharger. well not a supercharger in its self but a supercharger esque part. the idea was for my b18c 97 gsr. how ever i think i might use my d15b7 as the guinnea pig incase it blows or doesnt work at all. im going to take the stock air condiditoning compressor and have it engine mounted and belt driven like before. but only the low pressure side will be ran through a port somehow on the intake. and the highpressure side will run off its own cold air style tube and filter (just smaller). and i will wire it in to an rpm switch or just wire it so that when the vtec kicks it kicks on as well. but for the d15 engine which mine has no vtec ill use an rpm switch. i forgot what the numbers are for cfm how ever i remember with the b18c engine it gained 25.5%. HP increase. i know what your thinking rightnow, thats not possable from an a/c compressor. and your right, thats because im going to still have my cold air intake system that is naturally aspirated. im just going to give it a boost with the compressor. so the eingine will be running NA all the time and when i push the button or it hits the rpm range it will give somthing like 22% more airflow. like i said it only gains 26hp at most but its free. all i have to do is figure out the lubrication method so i dont burn out the compressor. but i also cant have oil flowing through the lines like it would as a AC since oil would be going into my intake and thats bad. just my crazy idea im going to start working on soon. reply with questions comments or anything else. i dont mind the your crazy posts but thats not gonna stop me ill just prove it to all yall conventionalists/traditionalists.

well my high performance engines teacher says that the 10 cyl air compressor in the car is the same thing as a piston cylinder type supercharger. he said that in theory it should work as long as i can modify it to put an oil sump in. were going to figure out how to rout the out-put to the intake. im thinking of mounting it as close to the throttle plate as i can get it to avoid pressure loss. im not routing it into the plenum or anything just into the throttle body. in theory it should be a barley noticable difference but on a dyno it would show a few horse power gain. im expecting around 16-18hp increase. which is about as much as having a 250$ K&N intake and a DC header combined with say a magnaflow cat back. which i allready have a long ram wheel well cold air intake, 68mm throttle body, headers and cat back. plus other things. so the 16 minimum hp increase will set me up to about 235hp at the crank.
 
I don't think the A/C compressor can not flow enough air in there. It's like trying to blow air through a straw into a vacuum cleaner. Maybe a slight gain at near-closed throttle but probably a loss at upper RPM due to power needed to drive the compressor. Well, might not even see a gain at near-closed idle either if the compressor isn't spinning fast enough.
 
Also, what and where are these gain numbers from? 22% more air flow from the A/C compressor? If the cold air is still on there any "boost" would be pushed right out the intake. You'd have zero-vacuum at most.

You'll most likely see more gains from wrapping the A/C lines around the intake to make "cold air" intake even colder.

As and ac mechanic I can tell you right now the ac compressor is built for hydralic pressure. the volumn you need will never be enough from it. Don't waste your time.

No way in hell an AC compressor can flow that much air. No way in hell. Not even a huge ass industrial warehouse sized AC compressor.

Secondly, the compressor relies on oil in the freon to lube its internal parts, so even if you did get some mega apocalyptic sized AC compressor and found a way to make it work, it would burn up after about 10 minutes.

Your shop teacher is a retard for even entertaining the notion.
 
I agree with the wrapping ac lines around the intake. I bet that would help a little and that is free...dropping weight is free...if you are looking for free power or at least ways to make your car quicker those are two...
 
the only thing about wrapping it around the intake is sure it will make it cold but you have to turn in on to do that and that will take power away
 
As dumb as it may seem, ideas like these can lead to other things. Then again communism works........... in theory!
 
If the cold air is still on there any "boost" would be pushed right out the intake. You'd have zero-vacuum at most.

:werd: And, if your having problems reaching zero vacuum you need to be focusing your efforts on somethin else.
 
I'm all about inventing new things and innovation, even free mods, but if you look at an AC compressor outlet and think you can get boost for a car motor out of it, you need to go back to pre-school.
 
the best thing you could hope to get out of this is if yuo were to just scrap that false-boost idea and you could route all you a/c into the engine bay near the intake filter. that would lower intake temps right off the bat. well, like they said it would take power to do it though so i duno man. fuck that

And that is a heavily modified A/C compressor, and is only good for about 3psi on a 70cc motor. It would never work on a car.
