fuel leak only when you fill the tank

i just picked up a 91 civc hatchback and when you fill the tank it leaks full from around the fuel pump area, i would like to know if its a common problem before i drop the tank. i was just going to get a new tank and pump. but before i do i thought i would ask around for an easier fix for now

Could be a bad/broken clamp or a cracked weld/rust in the filler neck. Or a bad gasket in the neck/tank connection. Being that it only leaks when filling, that would be my guess.

its leaking on the back side of the tank right were the fuel pump is on just behind the rear bumper, i was hoping someone had the same issue and was fixed with a fuel pump gasket, i dont want dump to much into it right now. i have another hatch im tryin to finish,
thanks

i had a leak like that on the first hatch i bought. the damn tank was rusted to hell and back. the actual seal where the two halves of the tank were welded together is where the leak came from. if i put more then 1/2 a tank in it, it would come right back out. either that or what phyregod said.

My hatch was doing that. I replaced the tank and pump at the same time and it fixed the problem. I found a used CRX tank and pump for $100, so I got lucky...

yah i have a "overfill valve that leakes when i put gas in it, i think im going to try and cover the valve up with something, to stop thee leak

no but heres the thing ok it will be near empty to ill go put in like 15 bucks to give it a half a tank, when im filling it up a ton of gas will leak from this valve and i dont no why, is it possible there might have been a cap or something on it before,,??? after a while the leak will slow down, but i can only fill my tank a 1/2 tank at a time becasue of this problem i hate it

It's a good place to start. Clean all the surfaces and makes sure everything is good to go before you install it back on there, and you shouldn't have any more problems.

Try to pinpoint further where the leak is coming from. I kept on having a real bad leak and I found it to be a bad fuel line. Put a new hose and clamp and still leaked. It was inside of the metal line that was rusted. Car came from ohio so had rust every where. But just take a look and make sure before you start spending money.

I have a 88 hatch tank sitting around, didn't have a problem with it. I can get pics to you tomorrow. Shoot me a offer when i show you the pics.

yah i think its just a rusted line or smething.......

my tank isnt all that sealed up , nothing major

but would it hurt to rub some jb weld around the seems of the tank and lines?
