i think i may have a bent valve...
so i let my bro drive my car and when he brought it back home he said that drove it hard and missed a shift and bounced off the rev-limiter (8100) and now the car ticks hella bad, except when at idle..... any ideas on wat it could be???

i dont see how he coulda bent a valve cause ive hit the rev limiter plenty of times without problems, tahts whats it there for

i did some research and herd that the timing belt tensioner can also make a ticking noise, but i repalced the timing belt tensioner water pump etc 10,000 miles ago

also the car has had skunk valves springs and retainers put in the car less than 5000 miles ago

thanks

nice, also i forgot to mention that at idle or if i rev the car when in neutral it does not tick and when decel. from a higher rpm it also does not tick, only when under a load......

That almost sounds like a small exhaust leak. I had the header gasket go out me, and it had a ticking/sputtering sound only when under load.

If you bent a valve you wouldn't be getting compression in a cylinder. Do a compression test to double check.

alright thanks!!

i need to do a leakdown compression test right?

so if it was a bent valve would i have a large loss of power?

if you bent a valve it would bog, barely run and sound like shit,do a compression test, almost sounds like what 99si said, exchaust leak

thanks yea it runs great still and idle aint fucked up, i just got home from a short trip to the market and i smell a burning so im gettin more convinced its the header gasket...

thanks for the help and not bein pricks bout it!!!

you have a interference motor, the only way to bend a valve is if your timing belt snaps and the valve hits the piston.

yea, sorry about my comment. For some reason when i read it the first time i thought you said tapping and not ticking.

Not true. A valve spring could snap, A valve could float or stick..

One way to check is take off your oil cap and listen, if the ticking is inside it could be LMA's or maybe you need a valve adjustment.

wrong you can bed valves by overreving an a engine and floating the valves

but i do not think that this is your problem at this point i would look for a exhaust leak
