Well, I dont know for sure really, seeing as the damned thing wont even open!

So, it jsut got here at 3 o clock today.

I turned it on, let it run for a few minutes, noted the loud ass fan.

It seemed to work fine, actually it was damn good. It wasnt until i tried to nup need for speed in that i knew there was something wrong.

I just called the company i bought it from, which were on ebay.
The guy tells me theres a way to get the drive to work.. you just have to push the eject button and then tap on the tray for about 30 seconds he says.

i havent tried yet, but does anyone know if it works or if this guy is just a douche?

Is it still under warranty? I guess you could try the press and tap thing, whatever the guy told you to do but check on the warranty status on your box as well.

sometimes it just gets stuck on the faceplate.. try taking the face plate off then open it.
it just pops off by the way.

p.s. the fan is louder when its vertical.

The 360 I received is a refurb, so they may have replaced the fan with somthing else, or thats what I assume anyways...

I brought the 360 over to my cousins house, and he told me to take off the faceplate and try it out. It worked, and now i'm worry free.

I started my live membership during it all as well. here's my gamer pic and gamertag if anyone on here wants to add me, feel free to do so.

well i wish i couldve gotten to you before your cousin, since we had the same solution. lol

some fans are just louder, if you ever open it up one day, look on the bottom of the main board and there is probably a wire soldered from where the fan plugs in to where the drive plugs in.
it makes the fan run faster.
the refurb i had had the same thing.

hell yeah... actually i think it may have just wanted to be an ass munch for a bit, cuz i took the chrome plated peice off the tray and it worked fine right then.. i think i may have to shave the top edge of it just a tad

or just keep the faceplate off and start it with the controller.

I've had 2 or 3 xbox 360 drives go bad on me, 2 of them were less then a week old....can't remember if the 3rd one was a drive issue or just the 360 taking a dump AGAIN, as with the 4th time....

I'm on my 5th xbox 360 now. thankfully I "think" I got a good one.

to maybe extend the life of your xbox, you should try making another fan for it.

like that.
it was simple enough to make.
most xbox failure is because they overheat.
and the solder melts, shit fucks up.

mine looks like shit, but it works.

I don't get the cooling setups, It seems that people who run cooling fans have just as many issues as people who do not, two of my systems died within 1 week of buying them, I'd bet my Z that runing one of those cooling fans would have not made the slightly bit of a difference. It's all a matter of getting a good xbox. My 5th xbox has lasted almost a year now, I keep it fully enclosed under my TV, the back of the cabinet is open but that's it, ZERO problems. The first 3 were kept out in the open, I pulled them out and set them upright anytime I used them, clearly, having them out in the open didn't make a difference.

So to start with, it seemed that 3 out of 4 xboxes would break, people running cooling fans had them break, people who didn't run cooling fans had them break. The few xboxs that did slip by the RROD that had cooling fans, the owners swear by it, then there's also people who have lunch day 360s who keep them stored like mine with zero issues.

Do the fans help? I'm sure it keeps the xbox stay cooler but chances are either way it's within heat range specs, the only reason they're breaking is because of hardware issues that were a problem before they even left the MS building.

the reason theyre breaking is because of lead free solder, which doesnt last as well in the heat.

Yup, again with the fans it still might not make a difference, that's why a few million 360s have died and a good bit of them still had the fans.

I for one would rather run my 360 with no fans, why? because if it dies I get a new updated one with HDMI.

If the fans truly are helping, would you rather mask the problem till your warranty runs out, or have it break on you and get the updated ver that has been fixed and gain the HDMI?

I've been hoping my current 360 would die =( I want HDMI!

p.s you guys do know the 360 has a 3 year warranty from MS right?

Just to be clear, my 360 does not have existing warranty. It runs loud as shit, which makes me think there may already be an aftermarket fan installed inside.

The warranty VOID sticker has been cracked, so there's no chance of getting it covered under that. Overall, it has worked just fine except for a couple freezes.

Today it froze while playing Forza 2. It made a blip sound while displaying a distorted image of what was supposed to be going on in the game. Kinda like what it looked like when you yank a game boy cartridge out with the power on. lol

here's my ride on nfs underground ... for now

aftermarket fans are placed on the outside of the unit not the inside.

For what its worth all 5 of my 360s were loud as shit. at least twice as loud as my PS3 and some people say the ps3 is loud......

They all vary. From the many ones ive used, I had one that was loud, one that was whisper quiet, one had a loud disc reader, one had a noisy tray. I have had one red ring and one disc reading problem.

Lets hope they get it right someday, however it seems they are slowly getting more reliable. I find the best way to keep your 360 lasting long is how you store/use it. I have heard that using it horizontal keeps the largest vents open rather than having it vertical which it then sits on one. I have seen people who play it while on the carpet, probably not the best place for it, more dust and heat.

Personally i keep mine up high on my entertainment system, on a clean hard surface, its away from heat and i clean and vacuum my apt often. The power source is suspended in behind so it has lots of ventilation. My apt isnt too hot either (even in the summer). I keep the discs clean and dont leave the console on for hours. Also i dont move or transport the console very often as well. Its my third xbox since release and i think my way seems to be effective.

My friend has gone through 5 since release, his room is hot, xbox is in a small place and he has thick carpeting.

Okay... I waited till today to post this. I was uber-mega-retarded pissed off when this happened, so I likely would have broken something while posting this update.

So here it is.

Last night around 3am, well this morning. I tried connecting to Xbox live.

The 360 froze up. Again. On start up.

Turned the thing off, then back on. Froze again.

Repeated, and it had a system error, Red ringed 3, E73. sonofabitch.

I contacted the seller, told him what was wrong, and he sent me this message:

Dear !cjvictoria!,

Really sorry to hear that, we assure you it was fully working before shipping, please go ahead send it back for replacement send us the console only ( keep hard drive and everything else ) with a copy of the message were you explain what’s wrong with it, and a letter with your eBay info.

Okay then, check. I have not shipped it back yet, but i have some questions for you guys who are on your 2nd or fourth. Can they say I didn't send the complete required items back if i just sent the console? Or it that how it works, so you dont lose game progress and all on your /hdd?
