OK Got a problem here...my celica wont start...it is a 88 toyota celica. Basically what happens is when i try to start it it just sounds like the starter is turning. I can see the flywheel turning while pushing it in gear and it is a brand new starter. Also when i turn the ignition i can see that the starter is turning the flywheel. It doesnt sound like it normally would when you try to crank the engine...sort of sounds like an electric motor sound...or a whizzing sound.

is it all of a sudden? or did you just swap a part or has it been a while since youve started it?
have you checked the battery?

yeah...just came out the other morning and it wont start. Hadnt driven it for a few days...that shouldnt have anything to do with it though. No new parts though...battery is good.

is there gas in the tank?

ummm...yeah. lol. Not sure if im getting spark and i cant tell if the pump is kicking on cause the car beeps and i cant hear it when i turn the ignition. But I think the engine would still try to crank ...you know like its trying to start even if there was no fuel or spark. Im not getting that at all. What would happen if the timing belt was broke?

it would sound like 2 trash compactors doin it behind a whale

haha ok...reason i was asking was because i actually broke a cam in half once and the engine sounded like it was trying to start but of course it couldnt. But this is diff. like i said this just sounds like a whizzing noise.

timing belt busted??

ok so i pulled the cover back over the timing belt and had someone crank the engine...well try anyways, but the timing belt is not turning...but the flywheel is. I also noticed that the belt looked pretty worn...small cracks in it. I guess I will have to pull it all apart and check it out.

pretty sure you have the 3f-se engine... which is not an interference engine... so you shouldnt have any valve/head damage to worry about :)

best of luck

Well shit...got it all apart and sure enough the timing belt was broken. The tensioner puller was missing some bearings and the seal was missing, not to mention it was completely seized. The other idler puller was all rusty. Well we changed everything out and put it all back together and it still wont start. still mostly doing the same thing. I think next week we will have to take it all apart again. :(

well i wont be able to work on it again for a week so i will have to wait.

OK well we took it all apart and put it all back together again and it started, the timing was off...I think it said something like 40 deg. Anyways we set the timing to 10 deg. but now the car has a hard time accelerating and today we started it and it kinda boggs down and dies. It ran ok before except that it missed quite a bit and the timing was off.
