ive been rackin my brain for months now on what to do to my 98 civic ex(auto by the way).i know i have to switch it to manual becuz the tranny wont hold on turbo . to top it off im broke due to losing my job last week so this is just to help me ease my brain.

1. is the b18c worth the extra grand?
2.in florida can i put an older model engine and it still be legal?
3.if so what year turbo kit do i need?
4.how much psi can i run on that stock engine and it still be a reliable daily driver?
(note:i bought the car for 6500 and i dont want to spend more than 6 or 7 grand on it. i plan on sellin it within the next 2 years neway and im only lookin to make 250-275whp)
5. i met this kid who has been wantin to race me in a 97 eclipse gts pullin 320hp.
what kind of hp do i need to pull to give him a good run?
6. are superchargers ne good with civics? if so can i kepp the auto tranny and what kind of hp can i expect from it?

im jus startin out bein only 17 so im new at this and if i would have really thot of it i wouldnt have gottin a honda or acura due to havin to do lack of power in stock engine...i would jus sell it and get a different one but again i have no money...would it make more sense jus to leave it and save up money for a new car?i seriously need help im too indecisive with my car apparently.

your help is greatly appreciated

my advice would be to swap in a LS motor (b18b) and boost that. you will be able to reach your power goals and the non vtec ls motors are way cheaper than a b18c. to pay a shop to do the swap, convert to a manual trans, and install a turbo kit and everything else to got with it is going to cost you every bit of the that 6-7 grand you are talking about if i had to guess.

but the b18 has less power than the b16 and is more expensive
unless i have to buy the same year engine as the car

and i already have dual exhaust and homemade cold air
so im already gettin 135 at least with that off the d16y8 motor
so it doesnt make ne sense to spend 2250 plus the 1200 to put it in with my shop
and prolly a couple hundred to get it changed to manual jus for 10 hp
im only lookin too boost maybe 10 psi

1. is the b18c worth the extra grand? no not, really
2.in florida can i put an older model engine and it still be legal? check your dmv
3.if so what year turbo kit do i need? 92-00 Civic kits bolt up basically the same unless you have a 96-00 DX/LX chassis...which then it is only slightly different
4.how much psi can i run on that stock engine and it still be a reliable daily driver? reliability is in the parts quality, condition of the motor and the TUNE
(note:i bought the car for 6500 and i dont want to spend more than 6 or 7 grand on it. i plan on sellin it within the next 2 years neway and im only lookin to make 250-275whp) Do a compression and leak down, swap it to 5 speed, get a set of ARPs and a headgasket and turbo it

Honestly, you probably arent making 100whp.
Automatic+dual exhaust= a loss in power when compared to a bone stock 5 speed y8.

what do i need to have done in order to run 250 whp?
it runs great it only has 80xxx miles on it

I would build that motor if I were searching for 250 whp.

In all honesty, I think you should drop the car at a shop, tell them you want 250 whp reliably, and pay the bill when it's done.

That is unless you actually want to research and learn a few things first.

well i hate the fact that i have to swap nething out
i wish i could jus keep the motor i have and not worry about blowin the tranny
but ive decided im jus gunna keep it this way until after this summer and ill work double shifts and save up and buy nicer car whos got 300hp stock so i can jus up the visuals and not have to swap the frekin engine out or nething...i will never buy another civic in my life thats for sure and ill prolly stay clear of all hondas and acuras lol unless your talkin bout the nsx...then i would be all over it.i kno ill prollly get get malled for talkin down about hondas to a honda website but its all based on personal opnion i guess

dude youve got a stock automatic civic.... kinda sucks i know.... when you bought it you knew it was an econo-car right?? lol

i wouldnt expect you to get too much more help on this site after the above comments :D

i thot i could do a whole lot more to the stock engine and keep the auto tranny
i kno how to drive manual i jus like to do othet things while i drive then worrying abut havin to shift but i like the way it looks and i think i might kill the dual enhaust and mayb ill do headers of intake manifold or sumthin little like that while i save for another car

Oh and dude, do some research. You'd be surprised at what you can learn.

Your first thought should be an auto>manual swap. And while you're at it, why not drop in a more power-friendly D-Series at least. Maybe a D16z6 and an OBD2->OBD1 conversion. Then start worrying about mods.

yeh I kind of getting closed minded about the whole swap but vein tight on money right now it's kinds hard to think about doin all that.maybe later on if I got the money all right then and I can do the swap as donn as I get the car maybe I'll do it.but I got college to think about in the summer so I can't blow all of my money on the car as much as I would love to I can't.but if I did do a swap I would want to put like a ctr or itr engine in there where it's makin almost 200whp at stock but again I don't have the money.but I do appreciate the help.

You bought an automatic SOHC Civic with dual exhaust...and you are dissapointed with performance. Not trying to be rude, but you should have researched before your purchase. You bought a gas saver, not a "performance" oriented car.
Go buy a car that is advertised at making 300hp stock...you think your dissapointed now, you'll be really disappointed then. Hp is just a number, a small percentage of a total package.

And yep, we've dynoed a ITR sapped 99 Civic, with only an intake and Hytech replica header, it sure did make 200whp...and a little bit of torque to go along with it. We've also dynoed a bone stock internal (studs and gasket) 98 Civic with our most basic kit...made 230whp/176 ft lbs...still has a/c...hp per $ who wins?

A dual exhaust on a four cylinder engine is dumb. You might have actually lost horsepower with that, not gained it. And FYI, swapping to manual doesn't add any horsepower, it just allows you to better utilize the horsepower and torque that you already have.

A CTR or ITR engine doesn't make 200 wheel horse stock. They make around 200 wheel horses at the crank, so by the time it hits the ground some is going to get lost. And just so you know, if you don't have the money for a swap, then you don't have the money to make 250 horses via turbo either. Either route is going to be expensive.

Oh, and do you realize that you can't bolt up other engines to your automatic transmission? You couldn't take a Type R engine and attach it to your automatic, it just won't work. If you want to swap in anything besides another D-series engine, then the auto-to-manual swap is a necessity...

Stop.

Just because you something with 300hp, doesn't mean it's going to be quickin the least sense of the word. Power to weight ratio, transmission, differentials, gear ratios, etc. all have factors in how quickly a vehicle moves.

If I were you, I'd start at square one. Pretend you never bought the Civic and start doing some research. Check into different makes/models and even research Hondas again, you'll see why a lot of people pick them up as projects.

Example: B16 was the worlds first engine to produce 100bhp/liter. 160 hp out of a 1.6 liter isn't too shabby, is it? ;)

Do some research. You won't regret it.
