hi i have a 91 hatchbac cx with a sohc zc motor with a 5 speed(owner before my buddy swapped it in) and i am just wondering wat i shud do to it i wud like it to be faster ofcourse but i am on a budget(ofcourse) i am gunna keep it a n/a build.I am up for suggestions on wat parts or head combo wud be best for my needs without breaking the bank. hear is the combo i was thinking of so if anyone can give me some advice or alternatives that wud be great. zc block with a y8 head and either the y8 intake manifold or my zc manifold on the y8 head. and if thats a good combination how much power do u think it wud yield and how much power cud it take before blowing up.or shud i just keep the zc head and get it shaved alil.sorry for the long thread i am new to forums and new to civic so i am trying to gather as much info as possible so i have a good idea on wat i want to do with my civic i just want it to be a reletivly cheap reliable car to have fun with .so any info wud be greatly apreciated thnx;)

again very sorry for the length of my post and its a zc out of a crx from wat i was told if that helps

shud=should
wat=what
gunna=going to
cud=could
wud=would

good grammar and spelling helps get better answers. we can help more if we can understand the problem. take some time to write things out. it will help you in the long run.

fo sho. i mean.. for sure.. lol. just swap a b in it. all the cool kids are doin it these days : p

srry for the grammer i just thought it would be way to long of a post.and as for buying a b series i dont want to do that cus i didnt want to have to swap the engine and tranny out because its winter and i dont have a garage to work in where that could be possible and i was thinking that i would just go to a junker because i need a new door and a new interior for my car plus the rear end of the car is shot so i was going to go and get a package deal for all that and a vtec head from the junker because this is just a cheap budget build for me just something to work on and sumthin fun to drive that can spin the tires

well hell you can spin the tires in just about anything.. so long as its a manual lol

ya but i wud also like my 3rd gear to pull also because how it is now 1st and 2nd pull hard but once u get into 3rd it has no power and i was going to pull the engine since i need to change my clutch and the engine only has 120xxx kms on it i was hopeing someone could give me some insight as to wich head would be best for my needs like im not going to be buying any performance parts aside from a header/lightened flywheel and maybe get the ecu tuned by one of the shops around here and that should be good enough for me its going to be my first car registered and on the road so im not going to nuts like the body is kinda rough so again if anyone could help me choose wich head i shud use and what parts i will need to make it work that would be great. i will post up some photos of my civic soon sometime this week.

take the a/c compressor off take off the power stearing pump and get smaller belt if needed cold air intake would make a big difference headers too its all cheap n affective

did we go over that shit last night

ok i forgot to list the perticulars of my car i guess srry about that. ok 1 its a 91 civic hb so there is no power steering 2 its a jdm crx motor and there is no ac in the car and there is no compresser on the engine it has a cold air sortof it goes to right behind pass light and it has an exhaust and a header is on the way as soon as i can sell my escort header so thats why i want to get a new head it has all of those easy bolt ons.

Between the lack of punctuation, spelling, and grammar in here, it's mighty difficult to follow everything that is going on.

You said you were on a budget--how much? What are you trying to do with the car? Are you just looking for a fun, peppy DD? Do you have the tools and the knowledge to do whatever work you decide on?

If it were me, I would just boost it. You can piece together a nice little turbo setup for pretty cheap. Get it tuned, and then call it a day.

well the budget isnt decided yet im kinda juss taken it how it goes and yes i just i want it to be a fun dd and i do have the knowledge and anything i dont know how to do either my dad or my buddys stepdad for sure will know how to do it and well the tool situation i have enough to do almost all jobs iv only had to rent a bearing puller for my buddy who owned the car before to do the front wheel bearings

I was thinking i would get a turbo because yes iv priced out turbo setups but i live in canada and i have to drive this in winter plus i need it to be relatively reliable and i kno if i put a turbo on the engine as it is, it wont be close to reliable plus i would be scared of throwing a rod evreytime i floor it or redline it and i dont have the money to build the engine for a turbo and get a turbo alongside all the other things i need to do for the car(struts/clutch/tires/hood/driversdoor/interior(the guy used shitty white tremclad paint on the interior wat a dumbass)so thats why i was thinking on just getting a vtec head and bumping compression abit maybe getting pm7 pistons too wile im at it and for wen i go to the dragstrip ill use some nos i can prob get a cheap used kit from the internet .

Oh and i forgot to ask this also how can i check to see wat obd i am and wat ecu i have because the guy also put in a different ecu i kno its not the origanal im pretty positive its obd0 and i think its an si ecu not to sure but it redlines at 7200 i think i cant remember if it goes higher than that bu ti kno its 7200rpm or more i juss havent redlined the car in awile;) and im not driving it yet

again i am sorry for the long posts but i am tryin to be as thorough as possible so that you guys can help me better i am trying to gain as much knowledge as possible im new to the tuner scene and iv mostly done alot of repairs on cars for friends

I did a SOHC ZC mini me acouple of months ago on my 91SI it pulls hard as hell in first and all the other gears as well.You'll need a V-tec head, jumper harness , V-TEC sub harness,ODB1 distributor and P28 ecu.I used ARP head studs but you dont have to.I spent like 400 bucks for all the parts including my valve job look on craigslist you can find stuff for cheap.

do i use the headgasket for the head or do i get the head gasket for the zc block and i was also wonder for the ecu u said the p28 wat is that out of and cud i use a stock vtec ecu out of say a gsr or type r integ just so i can get the vtec activation and the high redline that they have because if i dont have to tune the ecu then i wud have close to 800$ extra to spend on the motor

Boosting a car does not make it unreliable. Not tuning it does. You can boost a stock ZC all day long and not worry about reliability if you tune it right.

but my car has 120xxx kms on it so wid i have to freshen the motor up like do all the bearings and gaskets to make it a reliable daily driver plus wudnt i need new injectors fuel pump fuel rail and wudnt i need to change the oil every 2 thou kms and i really didnt want to have to tune a ecu cus around her it will most likely cost me 800 to 1000 dollars just for the tune alone

plus how do turbos react in winter i live in canada and its winter now and i dont have a block heater and i will be driving this everyday in about a month when i get it finished so will driving it in winter with a turbo wreck anything and will i have to get a tune done for winter and one for summer because in summer it gets really hot and muggy like some days u can taste the moister in the air and on that note how expensive/effective are air to water coolers for turbos compared to air to air
