I've painted my valve cover's (yea as in plural lol) a couple times now so i have some experience. i just get bored of one color and decide to start all over again. i'm actually thinking of picking up another ls cover lol. i've gone through a few different shades at this point... first i'll show ya the 2 z6/y8 covers i have, and then the 2 ls valve covers.

First i start by sandblasting the valve cover. this of course is assuming my friends in town and i can use the thing. if you don't have access to one you can always use paint/varnish stripper. aircraft stripper in the blue can is the best stuff to get. it will take some time, and its tedious if you want the end result to look nice, but it will get the job done. Then get some decent automotive primer, spray and let dry. for paint i generally use the gloss enamel paint which they sell at wal-mart. It's like $4-5 a can but its really good stuff. doesn't require a clear coat and it is quite shiney. one of em i did with a gloss metallic paint, and the color changing paint i bought as a 3 part kit online

One of the sohc covers i did just for fun because my friend gave it to me for free, and i decided i wanted to see how gold would turn out lol. and the other was the one i used when i did my mini-me swap. it came out (eventually) really quite nice. i attempted to spray it with the crinkle paint and followed the directions exactly, but it ended up not working out the way i wanted it to. so i sandblasted the paint off so i would have a real nice surface to work with. and then i decided i could live with gloss red.

And yea i took like all these pics with my camera phone, so bare with me on the pic quality lol

ninja edit: oh and btw the cover up there that looks pink.. yea it was supposed to be candy apple red. you can see how the can lied about the color lol. that valve cover is now the one with the color-changing paint on it.

Did you paint a metallic undercoat on it first? If not it takes on the color of the primer.

I just read the can and it seems that it was part of a base coat/topcoat system. there is a seperate can of silver base that is supposed to be layed down first. i didn't realize that. probably because i got it from my friends shop where he has quite a massive collection of all sorts of spray paints, and unfortunately for me the base coat for this paint didn't happen to be just chillin next to the candy apple red i picked up. so i didnt realize there was even a base coat i was supposed to start with lol. See with the color changing paint there is a black primer, then the color, then the clear. but with the gloss blue metallic, it does not require a base nor is one suggested. its just all in the one can. i'll be sure to read the directions on these things in the future more carefully lol.

heres mine i just through together i will prolly redo it and take more time on it.
