That's right folks, I, along with 250 of my coworkers, got laid off on Friday.

To make a long story short, I worked for a Granite fabricator/installer/seller. Kind of a 1 stop shopping place for new countertops. As it turns out, they don't pay their bills. They opened 3 new stores, out of state, in the last 2 months, and apparently never paid for anything. I was working 70 + hours a week all summer, 60 hours in a regular 5 day week, and banked a pile of money, thankfully.

There are probably literally at least a hundred customers, already paid in full, who aren't getting there tops installed. We were told last Monday we wouldn't be paid on time last week (2 days late), and they laid off 44 people at that time. We were told Tuesday another 20 layoffs were taking place on Friday. Wednesday they let go those 20. Thursday word came down the showrooms were not to sell any more stone, and Friday they told us to turn in our keys and go home.

What pissed me off the most is that I worked the last 2 weeks, probably for free, because I highly doubt they are paying us, considering they couldn't pay us on time when they were still technically in business. So we were told they were meeting with a bankruptcy attorney Friday, and apparently the decision was to lock it up and fuck everybody. Oh well, not much I can do about it I guess.

I don't know where the employees would fall under the bankruptcy as far as monies owed, but I know there aren't a lot of assets to sell off, because as I said, they didn't pay their bills. If anyone knows how that works, I would appreciate the info.

Other than that, I can either laugh or cry, and I got jokes. So fuck it.

Gonna get some shit done around the house, spend more time with the family than I have in a while, and figure out what to do next. There's money in the bank, the wife has a job that pays & covers the health insurance, so all is ok.

Their creditors will take priority. You will get lumped in with customers who got screwed. All you'll get is scraps if anything at all...Hopefully there are some tools you could steal...

False.

Employees are before creditors.

Paychecks are guaranteed, this is why a bank is never supposed to hold or wait until a paycheck "clears".

yup.

if you don't get paid, go get something worth your wage from the lot. i could use some granite counter tops :D

mmmm granite... my momma always wanted some granite counter tops.. uh huuuk

haha.. Well I'm almost in the same boat as you, except the reason i might get laid off is my company's owner is paying the bills, and cant pay us as much so he has cut our hours.

Good luck on finding a new job dude.

The issue with the paychecks is that they use a 3rd party service for payroll and human resources. This company doesn't cut the payroll checks until the owners wire the money to cover the checks into their account. If the money doesn't get transferred, no paycheck. So all I can do is wait and see. Like I said. Fuck it.

Welcome to the club.

<-got laid off on Thursday. I was a contract employee so I had that coming, but what peeved people is they laid off their own employees and also sent out a letter saying how 2008 netted the most sales and highest profits. This is after saying everybody's jobs were fine a couple weeks ago.

you can take a lien out for your pay. you come first, everyone else comes later.

and go out now and try to find a job before everybody you worked with does. there is going to be a flood of labor, get out there TODAY!!!!

i barely missed getting layed off last week.
they decided to eliminate my position.
but i got a promotion and raise instead of the boot. luckily a guy had quit a position at the exact time so i missed the bullet barely.
so if it doesnt work out in this new position, im shit out of luck.

but at least you were smart in the fact of putting money in the bank.

The first time you don't get your paycheck on time is when you start looking for a new job. That is a very bad sign. If a company can't manage it's payroll, it has much worse problems.

The first time was last week. They folded in a matter of days after that.

I don't know what the job market is on the North Pole, but it is pretty nonexistant in the Detroit area. So this could take some time, unless flipping burgers is something I'm interested in.

Interestingly, there was an ad in the Detroit Free Press yesterday for police officers in Anchorage. Think it pays like 70 grand a year. I found it odd that they were advertising in Michigan, although with one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, I guess it makes sense.

Even in bankruptcy proceedings? I know plenty of people who have lost pay and pensions while the organization's creditors were getting jerked off with what little money they had left.

The Alaskan economy is one of the strongest in the nation right now. The job market isn't as good as it has been, but it's nowhere near as bad as the lower 48. If you can handle the weather, it's a very stable economy to live in. Besides, Southern Alaska isn't that much worse than Seattle as far as the climate. Move to AK yo!
