My friend owns a 1990 Honda CRX Si, and wants to do a Mini Me Head Swap. He's looking to swap out the A6 head with a Y8, as it offers higher compression than a Z6. My question is, where can he find a complete head other than a junkyard? I've been searching google to no success. And ebay doesn't look to promising. Also, is there anything besides the head he would need? Any suggestions and help would be appreciated.

About the only place you'll find a y8 head is through a junk yard, ebay, or people selling them through internet forums. I would try checking every honda related forum you can find and look in their for sale sections. Things you will need besides the head is wiring up vtec and finding a way to activate it. The best way to do it is to convert from obd0 to obd1 and run a p28 ecu. It will give you better fuel maps and has vtec activation already in it. Another good idea is to get the y8 intake manifold. It flows air much better then the a6. Oh yeah when converting to obd1 you will have to change the fuel injectors and distributor.

:withstupid: You will also need a new headgasket, I would recommend ARP headstuds if your friend plans on doing anything in the forced induction department and look into converting to OBD1. It will save your friend some headaches.

Thanx guys, that answered the most important question, on where to get a Y8 Head. After Swaping the head, I'm assuming he'll get some aftermarket Cams and then a Turbo. So with all of this in mind, what is needed to convert from OBD0 to OBD1? And do you have any other suggestions?

To convert from obd0 to obd1 you can either buy a conversion harness from hasport or you can do the wiring yourself. If you do a search on google for obd0 to obd1 conversion you should be able to find plenty of sites that will tell you step by step how to do it.

So far this is the list of things my friend will need for the Mini Me swap. Hopefully I haven't missed anything.

OBD0 - OBD1 Wiring Harness
p28 ECU
Fuel Injectors
Distributor
Headgasket

And of course, the Y8 Hhead.

About the ECU, would this be aquired from Hondata, or is it a stock ECU from a newer model? Sorry if this sounds n00bish, but this is somewhat of a learning curve for us. But we are learning! ;) Much thanx again!

Sorry to open up an old thread guys, but I'm doing a mini-me swap (d16a6 bottom end, d16y8 top end) as well and was just wondering when you said about doing a obd0 - obd1 conversion, wouldnt it be either a obd0 - obd2a or 2b?. I have a p28 ecu for my mini-me swap. I'm just a noob as well and dont know much and am rather confused so I'm not challenging anyone I just need to know what to do, thanks guys!!. As well, I have the y8 head COMPLETELY apart and it's going for a hot-tanking soon, Im looking to maybe go Stage 2 or 3, which companies should I use and would this be a bad idea??.

You could just run a pw0 or pr3 on that. Theyre both obd0 and you would only have to run the vtec wires and knock if you went with the PW0. Its a dohc ecu but the y8 head will put you around the same C/R as the B16. Use a y8 head gasket, if you shave the head i wouldnt go over 0.010 of a inch. that would put you around the 10.5:1 ratio.

I already bought the p28 for $40 on eBay.ca. So, what your kind of saying is that if I just do a fresh stock rebuild and shave the head by 0.010 of a inch I will get 10.5:1 cr?. I am kind of confused if I'm staying with a d-series so I don't know if it's worth building the engine really hardcore, do you think sticking with a stage 3 d16y8 would be worth the money and time or will I just build this mini me stock then want a b16a2?. Also, I don't NEED to go with a obd2 setup? Thanks alot for the reply!!.

i thought all we had to do was run a P28 and convert to OBD1 (even though the Y8 is OBD2) i know that OBD1 is able to convert to OBD2 so there shouldnt be an issue

on my swap I used a p28, jumper harness, use a6 fuel rail and injector and intake manifold just to maki it easy. if you use the y8 injector you will also need to change the conetors on harness and the fi box in the corner for it to work and get the same result. use gasket for y8 and get arp head studs for the a6 block. once you raise the compression you will not be able to boost with out blowin the f up. I do have a y8 head minus the vtec solenoid, fresh cam and valves, powder coat cover (orange). pm me if interested.
