Just wondering, anyone here using a Tiger-brand rice cooker? We've had ours for quite a while now, probably 3-4 years. It was working fine until later last year; where the rice just started smelling if you left it in there for like 2 hours. I later found out other people around here had that issue too. Thoroughly cleaning the whole unit helped a little, but it comes back just as quick. Google isn't really helpful either.

Any thoughts or ideas what's causing the rice to stink? The rice itself is good, and preparation has been the same for years. Right now, I'm just cooking rice on the stove since it seems to last longer in a regular pot and not stink at all....buying a new rice cooker is expensive for me too.

pulley, lever, inclined plane, rice cooker.

It's a simple machine. Open it up, you'll prolly see the glue has either flaked off or whatever, making it burn the bottom of the pan unevenly.

I did that; checked every rubber seal and everything. Cleaning it helps, but it comes back in like 2 days. You think maybe it's the seals itself?

I dunno. I can normally just look at these things and say "Here is the issue" and then I allow my slaves to do the work. Like DaVinci without the money and accomplishments.

It's plastic outside with the "core" components made form steel or aluminum.

here's an ebay link that shows the inside also: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Tiger-Rice-C...emQQimsxZ20090109?IMSfp=TL0901091210001r12761

maybe there's something new in your water...if other people around there are having the issue too, and you can't find anything wrong with your cooker...

:shrug2:

People with the same cooker are having that issue. If I cook it on the stove, it's fine.

I think I'll try polishing the upper edge of the pot and maybe putting vegetable oil on the seals.

perhaps some type of bacteria or something growing in there f'ing up the taste?

clean the hell out of the metal pot part, then try boiling some water in it for about 30 minutes or so

:shrug2: i dunno

no way can you "give up the rice"

that's like telling a crack head... okay well... nm on that lol

I was just thinking the same thing when i read the post. maybe something is growing inside somewhere where you cannot easily clean. Can you describe the smell?

It's just a musty smell I guess. I cleaned the whole thing(with bleach too), and the smell is still there.

a musty smell may indicate the presence of mold. How much have you taken it a part. Also if there is a porous surface or some interior surface that cannot be easily cleaned it can get trapped in there.
Mold has this habit of growing in dark moist and usually warm places as we all know. Rice cookers generate steam usually which can trap moisture in the strangest of places.

Come to think of it. what about the heating element part? Sometimes older electric ranges, at least some that I have messed with get a film over top the element that melts and is just left over residue from what you cooked, and is not easily cleaned off. If gives off odd smells, that can be pretty rank. You could try to run it alone to see if that's what making it smell.

Buy another rice cooker... the $20 ones are disposable and work great. :)
