I am thinking 2 things.. disinformation or they are keeping quiet on it for a reason.. because they would have not allowed the news to run it if it was truly an issue..

If that reporter lady called one of the sergeants off that list, then I doubt its misinformation.
 
That sucks. Odd that it wasn't encrypted in some way.

But maybe this is why all the government guys I work with can no longer use USB memory storage devices, and you're definitely not allowed to plug anything personal into your computer. If all that information really WAS classified, whoever shoved it onto an MP3 player was completely ignoring all information protection procedures.
