I've been told that just dropping in cams will help more then a ls vtec? is this true

He has an LS and is asking if putting aftermarket cams in it instead of doing an LSVTEC conversion will yeild more power. And that all depends, you could do a set of stage 2 cams with a good tune and upgraded valve train and you would see noticeable gains. My friend had some stage 3 Crowers in his LS and it was pretty nasty.

O well then yea cams would be a nice start, whats your budget and you final goal with the car... we can find cams together lol

I dont really have a set budget but if im gunna do it im not planning on cheaping out i either want an ls vtec or a turbo set up. goal is above 300 hp

Above 300hp is gonna require pistons and rods. Keep the stock LS head, build it right, and enjoy.

If you are not on a strict budget, unlike myself, I would say do both. Check out theoldone.com You can get a fully worked B16 head (ported, valve back cut, C.C job, and quench zone, etc) built to your needs. After putting on the new head you can put whatever cams you want as long as they accomodate vtec. To make over 300whp your prob. gonna need some seriously forged/ titanium internals. FI is about the only option to get over 300whp. If your gonna go FI choose your cams wisely! Do some research on turbos, turbo math, trim size and boost so you can pair the right cams to the set up you wanna do. Check out Eric Dixon's boosted LSvtec DA9, makes over 500 hp!!

what kinda pistons, rods, bearings, springs, etc would be the best option?

The pistons and rods should be forged rather than cast. Wiseco pistons and rods are pretty good. Do some research on the net and see what all the top builders use that are making over 300 hp. Crower makes good cams. Golden Eagle makes good stuff from what i've heard, they also have a LSvtec kit that most ppl swear by. Valves, springs and retainers I would go Supertech. Springs are important if going over 300hp and boosting b/c of valve float. The key is researching before you buy, see what other people run in to with the products they use and find out what they like/dislike about it.

thanks its my first build so i need all the help i can get. would u recommend getting an after market intake manifold or just keeping the stock one?

aftermarket ones are usually prettier... but for what your doing stock will be fine

Getting an after market mani probably won't hurt but it really won't make your car much faster. You might get 10-15 hp increase and you should notice some throttle response. It does help with flow, depending on what mani you go with and how your building your engine. I think Skunk2 makes a replica of the ITR mani not a bad mani from what i've heard. Blox also makes good ones, if you don't mind it looking like a lego lol.
If your gonna go FI your gonna need more fuel in your mix. This is where piggyback systems, FPR's and or reprogrammed ECU's are a must. Look into Hondata 100 or 300 don't think they make the 200 any more.
