alright, i'm wondering if its possible to run car door speakers directly to an aux input w/o the use of a head unit... basically like big headphones, lol.. i'd wanna mount the aux input on my dash bezel or something to plug my ipod into..

Ive done it before, but I could never make it look pretty. Also, I was using small speakers which didnt drain my CD player too fast. Id think the bigger speakers might be a little to taxing.

they're like 5" speakers .. lol.. and they're for my iPod in my pickup .. tired of quietness, need tunes

if you've done it, help a fellow HS'er out

use a headphone jack, and wire it up.
i wired up a backpack stereo with amp and all.. just need to attach the power and actually put it in the backpack.

so, if i was to pull apart my craptastic earbuds, which wires do i connect to what? (negs and pos)

if its one solid wire..
ground the thicker, bare cable from the headphone jack.
ground the negative terminals on the speakers and wire the other two wires in the headphone jacks wire too each positive terminal on the speakers.

or is it split all the way through?

2 single wires.. havent pulled teh ear pieces off yet though, so i dont know what the wire looks like inside.. i think the woman has some that the ear piece fell apart.. lemme look

When you pull em apart, each wire has 2 smaller wires in it. The copper directly under the outer cover is negative, then youll see an insulator containing more wire. The insulator is usually red on one side and white on the other, doesnt really matter cuz either way its positive. Then all you gotta do is strip the out cover down farther than the inner insulator and hook it all up just like a typical pos/neg speaker connecection, not letting the pos and neg touch eachother. The real problem is, the wires are soo damn small.

just cut off the buds.
if its two wires, it will be a similar set up..
each "wire" will consist of a bare strand of wires, thats the ground. ground that.
then wire each speaker speaker to the remaining wires.
different companies use different colors, so check to make sure you have the wires wired to the right speakers before you solder or cimp.

Good luck doing either of those. In that little ass wire there 2 copper strands and an insulator that takes up about the same amount of space. So divide that lil wire by three and thats how much wire your workin with. Its like 26 + in gauge size.

here is a pic of the wires.. 2 very thin wires in each ...

i'd much rather have it run through an AUX input mounted on my dash w/ speaker wire running up to it

ive used just an old 2ch amp and a rca to head phone adapter for your input and wire the remote wire on the amp to the acc spot on the ign switch to turn amp on it will sound great and no need for a head unit

? There isn't enough power to make any real noise... I mean, if you put it up to the side of your head you could hear it, but thats what ear phones are for.

Aux outputs are just signal lines..

thats an even better, easier, and more efficient way.. but he said without a head unit, so i assumed he didnt want an amp either.

also true, it wont be loud at all unless you have an amp in the speakers(computer speakers and some floor speakers) or a really good amp in whatever is playing the music.

some are like that, others are simpler.
and some have a special coating on them that you have to use a soldering iron to melt off or a blade to carefully peel off.

It won't work just running off the headphone jack as stated above. The headphone jack is what is called a low level out and it will just send a very weak signal straight to the speakers, you will be able to hear it, when you have the car off and not driving down the road. as was suggested before get a small two channel amp, hide it under a seat, go to radio shack and buy a rca to headphone cable(they make em without the use of an adapter) then plug that to your ipod. it will be stealth and sound good, i have done it in many customers vehicles as well as my race car.

well, i think i'll leave my truck silent for now then... that 2 ch amp idea sounds good for my VW bug project

if you have good connections and good speakers, it can be louder than youd think.
just as long as the speakers are the right size.
too big, you wont hear shit. too little, itll sound shitty.

if you want a female jack on your dash, you could just drill a hole, get one of these and use the female end and do the same thing.
you could mount it on there to look pretty nice. a lot cleaner than a regular jack on a wire just hanging out..
