I've been working out, really this time, for about a week now and lost about 4lbs. Is this too fast? Pretty much Sat. and Sun I worked out for about 3hrs on both days. I took a break Mon and Tues because my leg and shoulders were sore, and got back on it Wed working out for an hour in the morning then 2 hours of vigorous workout. Weighed myself today and am 4lbs lighter. I've read to expect about 1lb every week for my size; but could losing weight too fast be bad?

I do a combination of aerobic and anaerobic exercises, although the aerobic exercises are usually with weights or resistance.

And FYI, I gained about 30lbs since mid-December.

pretty fast

I think you will be fine, you did not lose the weight in the most healthy way but, props for that--how much are you at now?

~166lbs(down from 170lbs). My goal really isn't to lose weight, but to cut the fat. I haven't measured my body fat ratio yet though.

I would believe that as long as you're not starving yourself, pulling muscles or getting your pulse in the heart attack range you're golden. Your body is loving the shit out of this right now more than likely. I'm gonna guess you're a fairly athletic guy and just fell out of the loop due to changes in your life? Hopefully you'll go right back down to your old weight. I hear a lot of stuff about muscle memory when it comes to gaining your old figure, so maybe that's it.

Are you sure your weigh in is accurate though? Cause 4 lbs could be a combination of food in your stomach, water weight and a good crap lol. You prob know all this and I don't mean to lecture, but doing it at the same time each day is important. When I was trying to get bigger, I would do it first thing in the morning after using the restroom. Anyhow, best of luck and congrats.

Yup, 4lbs. I was surprised. I weighed in the morning and just now(all after eating), same. I've reduced my caloric intake if that matters, but I'm definitely not starving.

Yeah, I used to be very active. When I got laid off I just stopped moving. lol. Anyways, I use to be around 130-140lbs after high school(I was around 128-132lb when I dropped outl).

i dont feel like reading a lot.. so i didnt really read past the first post.
i dont think its too fast..it really depends on how tall you are.

just some tips when working out - NEVER work out every day. you need to rest at least a two days a week unless youre only doing minimal cardio and some pushups(which isnt working out..). to burn fat, more reps, less weight.
start with higher reps, and lower weight, and work your way up with the weight and down with the reps.
if you wanna gain muscle, start out with like 12 reps of x weight(you know your strength better than i do), then rest a minute or two. then 10, then 8 then 4-6(maxing out), 4-6(maxing out). then rest for a few more minutes and move on to the next exercise.
then for the second exercise of the muscle group, start out with 10, then 8, then 4-6, 4-6.
i like to do supersets sometimes.. switching between exercises wihle maintaining the rep scheme.
but if you just wanna lose weight, double the reps, cut the weight in half.
thats all i feel like typing right now. lol

I guess I need to take bigger shits.

Yes, I'm familiar with taking breaks and how to work out. I was in track(mainly the 220 and 400) and took weight training too back in middle school and high school. I also had a VERY active childhood(since about 8yrs old, played basketball almost everyday, before that I was playing soccer, also used to ride my bike or walk everywhere). My brother is also a work-out freak so he usually gives me good tips.

As far as breaks go, I try(or am trying) to work out everyday, but different parts of my body for each day.

a lot of the weight training teachers at my old high school didnt know shit.
i was just sharing that routine with you cuz it is bar far the best one ive ever used.
along with my own little tricks.

but you really shouldnt work out everyday.
work out multiple parts that have nothing to do with each other on the same day.
like calves and traps and forearms or shoulders and hamstrings, or quads and back..

I agree that a lot of school weight trainers don't know anything. We probably had one instructor that knew what he was doing, but they moved him as the detention teacher. I actually learned from books.

Yes, resting does work. With switching out body parts though, it prevents me from getting bored. :)

Good to hear, it's a lot of work and you deserve to see results. After working 10 hour days and so many side projects, I'm just too tired to go to the gym lately. When I get a routine, I eat a lot more and have to buy the right food or I'll feel all groggy if I don't give my aching muscles what they want lol. Plus I sleep more. It becomes a big part of your week and takes dedication.

Meh, that's a debate that no one can agree on. Everyone has their own strategies for working out and people always seem to be butting heads about them. Not saying you're wrong at all, though. I personally see no problem in working out everyday. Although I would normally take the weekends off, I'd just work a different muscle group each day starting at the center of my body and working my way out. That's an extremely common thing among people I've spoken to.

For real. I'm on antibiotics right now. I ate a PB&J at work and shit out a fucking pot roast. Tell me that's not a good weight loss plan.

the first week will be faster... if you continue to lose 4 lbs a week, you need to eat more proteins and such, as you're simply losing muscle, not fat.

by week 3, you should slow down a bit.

every body is different. i can easily lose 10 lbs in a week just by eating like a girl. but i can also gain 20 by eating like a man :X

I'm down from 230 to 200. That came off easy. I still want to be down around 170. That's the weight I graduated high school at. It's a little slower going now. Not to mention I've drastically reduced my cardio because my trainer said I was running too much. Went from running about 25 miles a week to 5-7 miles a week. I may increase it again though.

As for fast weight loss, try 10 pounds in 24 hours. Sophomore year of wrestling.

most of the first bit of weight you lose is water loss. and as said before, if youre not starving yourself you'll be good. you wont be losing protein because thats the last source of energy your body catabolizes. it goes glycose (sugar) -> fat -> protein and it really hates breaking down protein because it takes a signficiant amount of atp to break it down and the return is just too little to be efficient plus all the extra nitrogenous waste.

as for muscle development there are 3 types of muscles. one for fast energy (weight lifting), endurance (marathon) and one in the middle. each kind is physically different and you can train it to be a certain type. as for how i have no idea. lol. im a biologist not a trainer. =)

I haven't gained or lost weight in like 2 years. Still hovering right about 140 no matter what I eat or do.

From March 2008 to June 2008, I went from 205 to 180 this was done all purely by eating habbits, no gym no nothing,.., The first week i lost 8 lbs. Seem to come off fast. I'm back up to 190...But I do go to the Gym now so...

jesus you guys are skinny.

if you used to weigh 140, and you weigh 170 now, you are going to lose some weight reasonably easy. it will be getting from 155 to 140 that will be harder.

losing weight too fast wont hurt you, if you lose it fast that means you shouldn't have been that heavy to begin with. what WILL hurt you is overworking your body. 2 hours of cardio a day is not good.

1) you body peaks at 45-60 minutes. after that, you shut down and you don't get any more benefits for the second hour. you would be better off to use that second hour to lift weights and build muscle. your muscles help burn fat and tone also. like lance armstrong. he's skinny because he does so much cardion, but no weights.

2) it's hard on your body. oddly, our bodies aren't meant to run for long periods of time on hard concrete or treadmills. mix it up a little. get some eliptical, bike, and swimming in the routine.

2 hours is not completely cardio. Most of my workouts are mixed. When I am doing cardio, there's usually some resistance involved and it's only about 10-15mins at a time tops. The hardest cardio workout I've done was jogging about 1.5mi with weights in a backpack at a "hilly" park and the row machine(don't know the exact name of it) for about 30min with resistance turned up to like level 7(has a scale of 0-10).

ie: when I go "jogging", it's usually sprinting, then just jogging or running until I recover, and the same thing again. I used to do this in school for about 1-2mi.

This is pretty disgusting but, go to GNC and buy a bottle of "colon cleanse" Take that stuff a few days in a row and clean yourself out. Thats an easy 5 pounds and you'll feel way better afterward.. That is one of the most important steps of getting healthy and dieting that everyone misses. There is all kinds of stuff that gets stuck in the colon..

Also, you should expect +/- 2 pounds every day for regular variences. 4 pounds in a week is fine.

I'm down to 195 (woops!) from 260. I meant to hit 210 and stop but my eating habits have changed entirely (portions, actual meal makeup) I'm dialing the calories back up but I'm used to eating less so I'm stuffing myself. And I'm going to put it on as muscle mass, so thats going to take a good while.
