Well, let me start off by saying I've used the search button on hondaswap.com, honda-tech.com, and google. I have yet to find an anwer... and transmissions are my enemy.
I got onto the highway with my daily driver (1997 Civic SI) on Wednesday, accelerated to about 90kmph and headed towards the city center. All was good until I let off the gas. It felt like somebody was reaching over and yanking my steering wheel violently to the right. If i accelerated or pushed the clutch in, it was smooth. If I downshifted to slow down it would violently jerk to the right no matter what speed or gear I was in.

I pulled over, checked my ball joints, tie rods and tire pressure. They were all fine. So I hopped back in and proceeded to limp her back home. I was thinking it was a bad cv or motor mount but everything seemed fine.

So, after researching and finding nothing overly useful, I put the car up on jack stands and started it up. Then I put it in gear, got out and watched my wheels turn... well WHEEL. Thats right, only one was turning. I've never come across this on one of my cars before.

So I need to know what you people think. Is it the differential? I'm guessing it's quite serious.

thats normal. unless you have a lsd trans for one will to only spin. but your missing something a ball joint, rod or something has to be broke.

its not the tranny cause it makes a shitty rattling noise and the car wont go in gear...
if the car is still shiftable its not the tranny...

could be a cv shaft of a bearing screwed up

just keep your head up and you will find the answer!

Well those responses are a bit of relief! Maybe i won't be pulling another d-series tranny tomorrow. I forgot to mention in my first post that when I hit the gas, the shifter moves... therefore I assume my mounts are pretty well done. Could it be that the rear mount or the tranny mount gave out almost completely?

it could but its just hard to say without being there. if you slow down real fast with the brake and the clutch pushed in does it do it.

Did you try free spining those front wheels while you had them up? I wouldn't think it would be your wheel bearing if it is only under acceleration but I'd check that too.

Edit: how much movement? I have all new motor/tranny mounts in my accord and the shifter moves slightly under accel, I thought that was normal ;x.

clutch

As long as I have the clutch pushed in it doesn't do it. It still does it when I use the brakes and transmission to slow the car down, but not when I push the clutch in and use the brakes. The shifter probably moves a quarter to a half inch when I hit the gas.

could be something on the clutch itself-- lost a spring, or the throw out bearing is toast.

but, the shifter moving is another problem.... clutch issues wouldn't cause that.

check the rear mount and the tranny mount. try to move the engine by hand in the bay.

transmission

Ok, so I have new motor mounts in and its still doing the same jerk to the right. So I took my wheels back off and put the car back up on jack stands. If I turn the driver's side rotor by hand, the cv moves instantly. However, if I do the same thing with the passenger side there's a 1/8th inch to 1/4 inch delay before the cv begins to spin... Any thoughts?

**lisadarcy** You need a jumper harness as you're going from OBD2 down to OBD1
I'm guessing this is the motor you're talking about:

Either way, I'd start a thread in the eg/ek hybrid section not in a completely unrelated thread

This just doesn't make sense. Could a CV joint wear enough to cause play that you can feel during deceleration without blowing a boot?

mystery solved!

Well to any of you who have been following my car problem, I fixed it today. The outer CV joint on the passenger side had play in it for some reason. I swapped it out for a new one and now it works as good as new. I'm guessing it was a symptom of bad motor mounts causing irregular movement during rotation. Thanks to all who gave input.

hey dude i am guessing that you were missing some needle bearings on the axle, where it connects to the hub for the brake rotor or where the axle is connected to the transaxle
