At my school, there is a scholarship called the Alumni Academics scholarship. It requires a GPA of 3.5 or higher, and you get money based on your GPA. I hadnt paid my school fees, so I never got my report card. My guidance counsilor showed it to me on the computer the other day, and it said I have a 3.52something. She then looked at a piece of paper that said I have a 3.4886, and so it stands. I haven't talked to anyone about it yet. I'm doing post secondary enrollment through a local college and they grade on a 10 point grading scale. My high school grades through the crappy 100-94 =A etc etc scale. I dont know if they took this into account. Its not a matter of life or death rather than a matter of 4000 dollars in scholarships. Just kinda sucks...

That does suck. If it makes you feel any better I never got a single scholarship or any other form of monetary gain from doing well in school. In fact, most of the skills I use at work have nothing to do with anything I learned in school. Then again I don't make a 6 figure income or anything, either... :p

I guess it comes down to what you plan to achieve. Will your goals change because you don't have a scholarship or can you still do what you want to do?

If I can afford my schooling, then no, it will have no effect on what I want to do. That's a good way to see it, and it was a non renewable scholarship, so it would have only been good for one year anyway. Im just worried that I won't be able to afford it, and be stuck having to choose a second or third choice of career.

That's as it should be. Unless you went through a purely tech program that is meant to train you for a specific job, then college should teach you HOW to think and how to interact intelligently with others, not just how to perform repetitive tasks...

Well, I graduated high school :D I know a few people in the same field as me (construction) who are in school right now and most of what they learn is almost engineering- proper concrete mixes, load bearing crap etc. etc. But none of that translates into any form of skill on the job- it's just math :p They don't teach you how to swing a hammer!!

Well I talked to them today and they said that they might consider people who were really close. im going to school for pharmacy (i know, wtf are you doing on a tech site?!) so I sorta do need to learn what will be taught in my classes, as well as communication and interaction skills.

Grades are king in anything medical related. It's not like a business degree where the colleges will accept anyone and then shit them out 4-5 years later with a degree. If you want to get into pharmacy school eventually then shoot for the best grades possible, and also take other subjects in school besides just the science classes (communication, business, etc.). Medical schools value two things: excellent grades and well-rounded people...

I am willing to bet that the kids you talked to are in a construction management program and not an apprentice. The construction management program is geared for the management side the trade not the hands on side. If you want to run the show you need the "math" stuff and concrete stuff to do this. If you want to swing a hammer then be an apprentice.
