I have a 91 crxdx that i drive real hard in nyc, my rack knocks and my mechanic says to get rid of my car cuz the rack costs more than the car is worth. Will my rack break or just make noise for ever. Its not power steering.
btw the car runs amazing i run it to 5k rpms constatntly and it just answers everytime.

You can just rebuild your rack/replace the tie rods. He's BS'n you about the cost.

i use my car for work. how long will it take to be rebuilt? its definitley not just the tierods. the rack makes crazy noise. not too much play in the wheel though and still steers perfectly.

im exagerating its not perfect i think i just have grown acustomed to it.

A complete new rack could be had for under $400 from an online dealership. If you go used, of course, it'll be MUCH cheaper.

Also, if you want to go with an aftermarket rack/pinion, Quaife sells a faster ratio for about $250.

A steering rack replacement could probably done in 1-2hr. Hardest part for me was getting the jamb nuts on the tie rods loose. Rebuilding would take longer, I'm not sure though as I've never done it but I'd assume an extra hour or two on top of the time it takes to remove/install the actual rack. You must also factor in alignment.

My opinion is you just get a used steering rack, replace the boots and tie rods, and have them install and align it. The issue may be the bushings also.

Also I think the Si rack is slightly shorter if you can find one. It was suggested to me that it is easier to replace the rack with the wheels turned all the way to the left, and remove the exhaust and shift linkage...
Good luck!

thanx so much

i woulda drove till it broke now im gonna order that quiafe set up and rebuild it myself as soon as it comes. I had no idea what to do. I will try to find an SI rack to rebuild this week. how much power can i force into the motor in my car?

Ever seen "Meet the Parents"?

... the scene where Focker and the Dad were racing

thats a movie homie.

I know it is. Have you seen it?

That's basically how people drive "hard and fast" in the city, They hammer on the gas off of a green light, then slam on the brakes in 200 feet to stop for the next red light, lol.
