Why im not getting fuel?

Sounds like a common problem but i think mines a bit different. Two friends of mine are looking at the car for me in their new shop. Its better there than in my driveway all winter long.

Problem:

The fuel pump isnt turning on with the ignition. We have checked the relay and it seems fine so its likely the wire to the pump? We know that part BUT we wired the pump to the battery and it primes and i have fuel pressure. The thing is even with it working the car still doesnt start and the second you start to crank the pressure drops and it only coughs.

What would cause this? Does the relay have to be working for the pump to work properly or does being wired to the battery do the same thing? Could a distributor wore being off affect it at all, or that just for spark? And yes we have spark.

Anyone have an ideas?
 
Could be the pump or the wiring/connectors to the pump.

Do you hear the relay click when you turn it on? Check the relay.

Pull the pump and test it.
 
They told me the relay was clicking, ill see about the pump.
 
the thing about electric motors is when they get weak, they'll still spin (prime in the case of the fuel pump) but when too much load is put on them they stop turning and just overheat. the pump may be coming on and pumping fuel just until it reaches whatever PSI it's condition lets it reach, then it stalls out, leaving you with not enough to start your car. to see if it's good, you need to flow test, and pressure test it. it will probably be worth it for you to just replace it since you're going to remove it anyway.
 
sounds similar to a DA i used to have when the fuel pump went bad. it had about 170k miles on it.
 
Relay click does not mean it works. The main relay is actually two relays in one. You could be hearing one relay clicking, or the relays are flipped on but the circuit is not closed due to bad solder.

Take the relay out and actually check it(also go by Helm's algorithm/flow chart for testing relay; listening for a click is not enough).
 
Ok ill do that too but still the fact that even with the pump wired to the batt it still doesnt seem to be working right. Ill have to recap with them soon, they get busy in their new shop lol.
 
If the pump isn't working with direct power supply; replace the pump.

Also, how's your fuel level?
 
Well the pump at least primes up with direct power.The level in my tank is half.
 
Definitly check all your wiring,my explorer's wiring went across the exhaust and melted until it broke. If you get the pump to run, and the motor isn't running, check your filter, all your lines, make sure that there aren't holes in anything, then i'd say it's a bad pump.

Thats cause its made by ford :( , It so sounds like a bad pump bud, check aftermarket fuel pumps before you buy a OM pump, they are around 100$ for a 255 welbro.
 
^ ive been seeing that everywhere about the Walbro's. I might order one after i talk with my buddies, see if its the best thing i should start with.
 
if that is for your year/make of civic yes you just pull the sending unit out and put that one in its not to hard.
