I was just wondering if anyone owns or drives a Kia. My wife is interested in the new Kia Soul. Just curious on reliability and if there are performance parts for these.

they are horible resale sucks. Buying a kia/hyundai is like buying a double wide instead of a house. I rebuilt a trans in a 02 sephia and the thing was about rusted in half they dont use any seam sealer or paint on the bottoms of these cars. All that they do is spray a sealer on them a go. Ive also been told that they dont galvanize the bodys either. If you plan on driving the wheels of of the thing and owning the thing till it dies go for it there cheep and pretty darn reliable. The engines and trans in them are bought from big name manufactures toyota honda mitsu and even some ford/mazda

So you are saying Kia buys engines from other big names instead of building their own?

Kias seem to be fine cars mechanically, since they source their drivetrains. The trouble is that the cars they put them in tend to be of mediocre build quality.

As long as it's not a Rio. I haven't heard of one of those things lasting for 50k mi without running like shit or showing 20 years of wear.

Just out of curiosity, where is a list of what motors go into the cars? I did a quick Google search, but didn't really render anything other than what appeared to be speculation on which manufacturers they used...

Kia is owned by Hyundai which out bid Ford when they went bankrupt in the '70's. I believe they are a "father/son" company. Father owns Hyundai and son runs/owns Kia. Kia and Hyundai share parts and engines. Hyundai builds and designs engines for both Hyundai and Kia vehicles.

Still doing some research about them though.

its a hyundai elantra you are thinking about.

my mom has an 01 sportage LX with about 15K miles on it. runs/drives great.

the Genesis coupe uses a de-tuned 4b11 which is the Evo X motor

-they just mount it longitudinally for the RWD setup

i work at a kia/hyundai/isuzu dealership and i must say. I always thought kia sucked ass before and I admit they did/do but not almost as bad as before. all companies gotta start somewhere. I honestly feel their shit has gotten and will get alot better.

I would own a hyundai myself, I would not own a kia for anything. I work on alot of both and I can say from experiance that the hyundais have better fit and finish, and are more reliable. And yes, the Rio is one of the biggest POS's on the road.
