I am wondering if anyone knows if the JDM B16A will pass the sniffer.

I have been researching that to be BAR'd you need

OBD1 USDM p30 ecu

OBD1 USDM B16 throttle body

Tap line for that valve that goes to the charcoal canister or get USDM B16 Intake Manifold (Also heard Skunk2 Intake Manifold would work)

USDM Throttle body (I think any B-series)

I am wondering if anyone knows if a JDM motor will pass the sniffer as it sits

My EG SI has no CEL's and runs good. Just wondering if it would pass if visual inspection wasn't a factor. All parts are JDM at this point

to tell you the truth, i'm not sure.. i know mine failed when i first went to the BAR ref.. but after sourcing the p30 ecu and manifold (which wasnt easy, took some serious searching).. i had to replace the o2 and cat.. but it passed w/ flying colors..

oh, and you can use a obd1 Integra LS throttle body.. its the same

I figured the LS would wok based on aftermarket app's and the vast amounts of B-series they would fit onto.

Makes since about the CAT and O2....these cars aren't 'Spring Dasies' anymore and my motor is OBD1

Didn't you throwing a code when you knew you had to replace the O2 sensor? Or...?

My Cat is old too but my LS was never a problem (in terms of the Cat).

Before your B16, Did you have another motor in that car and it smogged fine with your Original Cat?

And I hear you saying the conversion is quite the journey? Well, I hope you would let me know if you run into an ECU for me. No other ECU will work for those Ref's? I figure not but took a shot in the dark.

well, lets just say i failed the sniffer about 3 times before i actually passed.. the ref was nice enough to void it out since it failed as soon as he hooked it up.. had a new cat and o2 put in.. bam.. passed like a new car.. super low emissions

Aslo long as you hooked up all the emission componites and you cat and o2 are good a JDM motor should have no problem passing 50 state legal emissions. I live in Arizona we are almost as stick as Cali and JDM swaps hardly ever have problems here. Make sure you keep swaps legal and the same OBD.

You may want to check with the State Ref regarding BAR for the JDM motor for your EG.
I believe they are starting to enforce a new law that passed last October. Not sure if it is true, just hoping to pass on some information that may help you.

Taken from Honda-Tech:
THE ONLY TIME A JDM MOTOR CAN BE INSTALLED IN A CAR LEGALLY (KEY WORD) BAR'd IS WHEN IT IS THE SISTER MOTOR IF THE CURRENT MOTOR EQUIPED IN YOUR VEH.

MOTOR SWAPS ARE STILL LEGAL AND YOU WILL STILL BE ABLE TO BAR LARGER MOTOR SWAPS BUT THEY NEED TO BE A USDM SWAP ONLY IF THE CAR WAS NOT ALREADY EQUIPED WITH A LARGER MOTOR.
Just failed CA Referee Inspection.. - Page 2 - Honda-Tech

hmm.. find a b16a3 block and be good then.. hah

uhhh..
i didnt get it..:shrug2:

Basically it means that JDM swaps are not legal in CA unless the USDM version of the motor came in that version car.

Example
94 acura integra you can swap in a JDM gsr motor since there was a GSR motor for that type vehicle.

94 civic hatchback JDM gsr motor swap is illegal, however if you have a USDM GSR motor swap, then that would be legal.

Hope I made it clearer for you.

USDM or JDM they wouldnt be able to tell the diff. The smog test will be fine as long as your car is running right and the swap was done correctly.

umm.. wrong.... you have to go through a process called BARing the vehicle.. they know the difference between engines.. its called a stamp on the block.. JDM engines are b16a, USDM engines are b16a2 and b16a3... technically those are the only 2 he can legally swap in (other than other USDM motors, ie: h22, b18, k20) and BAR since they've passed a new law

Ouch...this all sucks. I have the motor in and want to keep it.

So i could get a GSR or del sol bottom end....? And I would need that USDM ECU with USDM throttle body.....and tap the line in the manifold for that purge valve to the charcoal canister.....

Does that seem logical....or I shouldn't say that....does that seem referee'able?

you cant use a GSR bottom end w/ the b16 head.. not legal in CA.. it'd have to be a b16a3 block... a b16a2 block may work as well, but i'm not promising that

Would they be able to tell its not a B18 head?

So you did hear about the 'new' law? WTF? Sounds like there might be a loop hole if you see a judge? If the car passes visual and sniffer....WTF?

yes.. a b18 head has p72 stamped on it.. a b16 head has pr3 stamped on it.

i heard about it once that guy ^^^ posted the link to H-T ... you can always try though.. it'll cost you $30 for the test

I never had a problem with smog on my LS in my hatch (never BAR'd it) when i smogged it

I would just smile and talk about anything else. They would even be cool about my Non CARB intake/filter but would tell me how its technically illegal

I just wonder if that valve to the canister will affect the sniffer reading. If it doesn't...I think I can make it through smag and cops have been cool with me (when I've been pulled over).

Cop pulled popped my hood. Told me about the air filter wondered about the metal piping that was for the OEM intake piping (which took him 3 minutes to understand) and he measured the head light height (was too low but that also meant stock height was too low....huh?)

He ended up letting me go....couldn't complain

I made a call and I am supposed to get a call today or tomorrow from a ref so he can break it down.

thats what i'd do... call and talk to someone..saves you $30 for them looking at your car and saying you fail.. haha

I just found the information from Honda-tech. Supposely it was a law that passed last October, but they are recently enforcing it now. I hope it aint true, let us know what happens when the state ref calls you back. good luck
