O.K.

I've replaced:
Distributor
O2 Sensor
Idle Air Control Valve
Fuel Filter
Fuel Pump
Main Relay

Everything that I replaced is brand new, and I pretty much needed to replace most of it, besides the fuel pump, but hey, now I got a better one.

The problem:

The car idles pretty much just fine, occasionally dies.
When I'm driving it and start to accelerate harder the tach will bounce, and the engine will sputter and buck a little, like it's not getting something of what it needs. I'm completely stumped now, and on monday I'm taking it to a mechanic to run some diagnostics on it, to figure out the problem. What's weird though, is that right after I replaced the fuel filter, it stopped having the problem...for a week. Then the problem came right back. So the damn mechanic better be able to figure out what the problem is. If anyone else can thing of something, let me know.

have you checked for water and or crap in your fuel tank, sounds like you fuel filter is clogged up with shit, thats why it was okay for a while until the new filter got clogged again.

yeah check the filter again,if it keeps getting clogged up there is something in the tank

Empty the gas tank and see what the gas looks like. There should be a drain plug underneath. You could also remove the fuel pump and look inside the tank with a flashlight. I'm not sure if you could see much that way, but I would give it a try.

You've got another vote for bad gas. Do you usually fill up at one station?

When I replaced the fuel pump was looking in the tank, and it all looked shiny and new lol. Even the first filter that the gas goes through was clean. Took it to a mechanic that my family has gone to for years, and we went for a little drive. He said that it could be either in the tach itself, or on the negative side of the coil. Said he could start looking at it on monday. I'll update on it as soon as he lets me know the problem.

It is such a pain in the ass dropping the tank and getting back where it needs to be. Wasn't paying attention and squished my heat guard between the exhaust and the tank. Then ran out of daylight, so I had my girlfriend laying on the ground next to me holding the flashlight. It was like a family project lol. Had my mom working the jack, girlfriend hold ing the flashlight, and my younger brother on one side of the tank putting it in place. Fun stuff. Still had gas in the tank, otherwise might have been able to do it with less people.

Just for shits and giggles, make sure all of your grounds are in place and well connected.

i had a 91 civic and it used to die every now and then, i changed the fuel pump, main relay, ignition coil and it woud still die. So, my brother thought he could get to the pump from the top, and we took the back seat off. When we got to the wire harness for the floater, one of the wires had burnt, and it was making false contact. We cut the wire and put a crimp connector and solved the problem.

^^ten minutes and worth a try

Vote for checking grounds too.

Any work ever done under the dash?? If so, maybe check Wiring there

I agree. Make sure you are getting a good metal to metal contact. Scrape the paint off, ruff the bolt/screw up and make sure its tight.

Yeah, it's out of my hands now, it's over at his place. He's an honest guy so he'll let me know everything that was wrong. But, no work ever done under the dash. Everything that was ever done was done by shop, until I got it. Got a whole folder full of mechanic bills and shit. Some dude was even crazy enough to pay like 1200 dollars to get an engine installed...crazy.

Did you replace the whole distributor or just parts(I ask because some guys say "replace distributor" but really just change cap, rotor, and coil). The symptoms seem to point to ICM(especially with the bouncing tach); which is in the distributor.

Yeah, brand spankin new dizzy. ICM...Ignition coil module? If thats what that stands for, mechanic was saying it might be on the negative side of it or something like that...I don't know much of anything about distributors. Or he said it might be the tach itself.

Yes, well "control module". One of the biggest symptoms of a bad ICM is a bouncing tachometer.

The first mechanic I took it too was one that my G-ma has gone to for years for her truck. He's a Ford only mechanic, but said he could work on my car. What an idiot. He kept my car for 3 days...I drove by 3 times (yes I'm paranoid when someone else has my car) and the car didn't move once...So I called him and he tells me that he's been researching it, but hasn't a clue what it is. Told him I was going to come pick it up and take it somewhere else. Took it to some other people (made sure they knew about hondas) and they fixed it right up.

So I got it into the shop, and they started running some diagnostics on it...ended up being too much resistance in the wires to my MAP sensor, and my Vacuum box. Was going to solder the vacuum wires myself, just didn't get around to it. I'm happy my car is back on the road and I can drive myself to work now. Ha. The only problem I'm still having is my O2 sensor. Code keeps being thrown, but it's a brand new sensor. Shitty.
