Ok so Ive got an older 30 gig Zune that I still use pretty reguarly. I was just pokin around the other day and noticed ppl "hacking" their Zunes. So far, all I can gather is that theyre switching firmware versions, but still sticking with the original Microsoft firmware. Is that true? Also, it seems that a popular "hack" turns the Zune into an external HD. I tried it, and its not somethin I cant live without so I undid the changes. Finally I treid puttin games on it, but again its not somethin I really care to have so I erased all that BS too. My question is, is that all there is to "hacking" a Zune?

NOTE: I realize that "hacking" and "modding" (i.e. installing a bigger HD or high cap batter) are different, and right now Im not tryin to "mod" my Zune.

I have seen a couple of things out there. Mainly what you listed but with the Zune HD coming down the pipe I wouldn't be surprised to see some people do some more work after they upgrade.

Ya thats what I figured. I wont be upgrading unless my 30 meets an untimely end. Thats a lot of money for me to spend on somethin thats gunna sit on a dirty table and get metal chips bounced off it all day lol.

I am for sure upgrading to the HD. I have the Halo 3 branded Zune 30.

On a somewhat non-related note, I just jailbroke my Ipod Touch and am enjoying all the warezified apps the app store.

I hear that you can get 3.0 on the first gens. I would give that a run to see how it goes.

I saw a concept for the Zune Touch Phone. Doesnt mean itll ever happen, but if it does and its at least close to the concept itll be pretty killer.

The concept is the Zune HD. There are official press shots and such out now. Full web browser + wifi = sweet.

On an even less related note however, the Pre has already been cracked. Tethering is probably a few weeks away.

No it wasnt the Zune HD. The one Im talkin about is the Zune Phone. The Zune HD has had a spot on Amazon for like a month.

if i had to choose, i would definitely get a zune. they are much much more reliable than those dame iPOSes.

I freakin love my zune. Then again I really like the fact that Microsoft is trying to create a more integrated brand. Between my desktop, 360 and Zune I can access almost all of my content in anyway I want.

I dunno, I haven't had a single problem with my 2G Touch. I don't even have ANY music on it right now... I use it strictly as a little computer thanks to all the apps. Web browsing, email, podcasts, all the tv episodes I never have a chance to watch, and a ton of games. I find myself using the notepad and calculator alot, and it's a really handy flashlight (with a dedicated app for that!). If there's something I need to do from my computer I RDP into it from the ipod and do it (mainly to start up utorrent and start downloading yet another show I'll put onto my ipod that I won't have time to watch :)). If it were also a phone, I'd be ecstatic.

EDIT: I even took it into the woods with me last week and used the bird ID app... Give it your location and it tells you what birds are in your area that time of year. Then you can narrow down and identify birds by their looks or by listening to a recording of their call and matching it with what you hear.

I've also got a 'Dyno' app that works like a dumbed down GTech meter, using the ipod's accelerometers. It's not as accurate but it's dang close.

All this from a hard core Mac hater from back in the day. :)

Actually, Dynolicious is far more accurate than the gtech.
