Kung Foolin'
I had rank test for kung fu yesterday. About half an hour in, we were demonstrating sparring. I was sparring this guy testing for his rank 2 levels higher than me. He used to be a Student Instructor a while back.... I was testing for 3rd lower level, and he was testing for 1st lower. (You start at 10th lower as a beginner and work your way up.) This guy usually fights pretty hard, even making contact when we're not wearing gloves or mouthguards. (We always spar with our shoes.) My teacher said I was doing pretty well against him until he hit me....

1. Doing some paperwork before getting stitches.
2. My third eye.
3. I think around 4 or 5 stitches inside and 11 outside.

EDIT: I don't know if I should have put a NWS label on this, but I didn't think it was all that bad....

So what did he clock you with, some Chuck Norris shit? lol so were you wearing gear? If you were demonstrating, I'm gonna guess he shouldn't have made contact, eh? If so, what a douche and I hope he pays your bill.

Well, it's "controlled sparring". No gear, we rarely use anything. It's kung fu, and he clocked me with a punch, but we use lots of kicks, sweeping, and other circular technique. I think he shouldn't have hit me as hard as he did, but on the other hand, I don't think he was trying to injure me or anything. Over time, the level of conditioning of your body is drastically different than a regular person on the street. His knuckles are undeniably very conditioned. We're a family, so it's not like he was being a douche, it was just something that happened. The higher you go, the harder you spar, that's just how it goes...

I did finish my test too, by the way! :D I got hit around 11am, and finished my test at about 1:45. A couple times I got dizzy and had to catch my breath and get my bearings, but I survived!

You always get hurt by the beginners, higher rank people should have good control.

With that being said, I have zero issues working with higher belts, I'm always super careful of the noobs.

That has always been my impression the newbies are forced to wear gear because the don't know how easily they can hurt someone with a 'simple' strike or kick.

They all know it can hurt, that's not the problem, its that they have no control,
I can throw a punch or kick and if someone Im working with doesnt block it I can easily stop it just short of impact. Same goes for any joint locks or chokes. I know when the pain starts and just how far I have before it reaches the limits.

newer people either dont apply chocks/locks hard enough, or its over board. Worst of all, when you tap letting them know you're at your peak of pain, they dont react fast to it.

Good point on reaction times.

Yeah, he has good control, but he also somewhat of a bruiser. He's a big guy, about 200 lbs, 6' and he's 36. I'm 140 and 5'8" and 22. He just got me with a good shot and I missed the block, plain as that. My teacher mentioned that I was holding my own really well against him. I landed a few shots too, and I know that my control is better than his, hahaha.

But I did find out today that I passed my test, with flying colors too. I scored a 94 on the written and didn't fail a single thing on the physical part. From what my teacher told me today, it is EXTREMELY hard to do that at all, let alone testing for 3rd!

w00t!
