I went to set the timing on the motor and I had to turn the distributer to full advance just to get in to the timing marks. I read in one of the threads that if you have the two wires on the cam pos. sensor it will retard the timing, after reading that I switched the two wires. The timing then seemed normal but I got a cel code 9 on the stock si ecu for the crx. The haynes manual says code 9 is crank position sensor so I assumed it must have been right in the first place so I switched it back but I am back to retarded timing. Does anyone have any ideas.???

sounds to me like your camshaft timing is not correct

I guess it is possible. I think I have the timing pretty close. I did'nt get them to line up exact it seemed like it would be a red cunt hair off if I moved the cams a tooth in either direction. Do you think a worn timing belt would cause that it should be replaced. My friend has to finish paying for the rest of the other parts I put on it before I buy more. Now I'm getting cel for o2 and I can't get the f'n thing out car is nice and hot and it still won't come out.

If I am off one tooth on the either cam do you think it would retard the timing that much. The distributer has to be in full advance to get in the timing marks. I will try to get a pic of it

I've been playing with the timing belt for a while now, I cannot get this to line up exactly the crank either has to be a touch on either side of tdc, the belt must be a little streched, what side of the tdc line should it be on if you'd have to closer to the timing marks or the other way?

i had experience with the zc and timing its a bitch.... i tried so many things to get it through emissions but it wouldnt work i mean the car was running its sack off but not good enough for DMV. so what i did is got a set of adjustable cam gears from aem and advaced the timing + 2 degrees and that got me through and no more CEL its worth a shot.

thanks for that write up, it is not that I don't understand how to do it, it is that when I go to line up the exhaust cam in order for the belt to mesh in the teeth I have to move the crank slightly away from tdc because when the crank is at tdc and exhaust cam is straight (lined up with all marks/holes) the teeth on the belt line up perfectly with the teeth on the gear. The belt has to go a half a tooth in either direction to line up and I am not sure if I need the crank to move closer to timing marks or the other way.

At first I had the crank slightly after tdc with the cams lined up and that was when I could barely get the timing into the timing marks, I will just try them the other way closer to timing marks and see how that works.

And skellagher I did get this motor to pass emissions here in canada when it was in my crx all I did was retard the ignition timing all the way back to about half way between the timing marks and the tdc mark. I now have a b18 in my crx and I sold the zc to a friend and I am putting it in his crx.

The zc was soo sluggish with the timing retarded and it was horrible on fuel but it passed the emission test with great numbers.

I have tried the timing belt slightly passed tdc and slightly before while keeping camshafts inline to top of head. Now the timing of the crank is slightly towards timing marks with cams lined up. The issue is still the same I cannot get the ignition timing set to the center mark, with the distributer to full advance it barely reaches the first timing marks. I feel like there is something else I am supposed to do with respects to the 88 si harness and the zc distributer, I hope someone out there can help me.... Please.....
