high pitch whine in all gears

I've got a 92 Civic hatchback with a GSR swap, and ever since I've had the car it has had a high pitch whine while accelerating. I've had the car for about 4 months now, and I thought it could be something in the tranny, but then I swapped the tranny from the 93 GSR tranny which was in it, to an LS tranny with a GSR final drive, and it still had the same noise. I also have a Quaife LSD which I had in both trannys, I thought maybe it was some kind of whine coming from the LSD, but my mechanic said he has ran those for a while and that they shouldn't make any noise. My mechanic also mentioned it could be wheel bearings. Any other ideas?

Hey do you have a streo with an external amplifier. I have this problem or somthing like it. Try a new alternator and or battery.

No, I don't think it's anything electrical. It's more pronounced as I increase speed. Kinda sounds like it's coming somewhere from the drivetrain.

Got a supercharger on it?

Maybe powersteering (if you have it). I had a couple cars that did that and it was the powersteering pump.

The miata did it too but it was the differential.

Alternator speeds up when you increase speed.

check your gear oil level and if not that its probably waterpump ,alternator ,or belts.one of these may be your problem...

can you record the sound?

also try reving the engine when the wheels arent moving. if these is no sound then it just might be the wheel bearings.

Yes, but the sound is proportional to wheel speed, not engine speed. Like I said, the higher my speed is the louder and more pronounced it is, and it's only when I'm in gear.

Throw out bearing?

This guy needs to narrow down the noise if he thinks he's gonna get any help on here. Guys are all over the damn car.....Stereo? Alternator? Fluid in Trans? Blah blah blah

NARROW IT DOWN. PUSH THE CLUTCH IN....DOES IT GO AWAY? Is the sound based on tire speed or motor rpm? Are all things that dont need to be on turned off. Does it do it louder in first....fifth...etc.......GIVE MORE INFO....use your words!

I'm pretty sure I have narrowed down everything that you have mentioned, read the rest of the replies. Now, as I said before, it is only when the car is MOVING, and when I'm IN GEAR. Do I really need to say all this again? Anyway, it becomes a higher pitch as my speed increases, and only when there's load on it (when I accelerate). Let me know if there's any more info you need, but don't be an ass about it. Thanks. And no, I do not have a supercharger.

When you swapped the LSD, did you swap the final drive too? If so, how did the teeth on the gears look? It could also be the differential bearing too though.

Yea, everything was different. Hmm, well, I hope it's not a bearing somewhere in the tranny. I guess I'll check out the wheel bearings too though. Thanks for the help.

I want to say it's not the bearings; as those would make noise all the time or when turning(wheel bearing).

Since it's happening on both transmissions though; only bearings that are the same is the differential and wheel bearing though. I say check the fluid because you're supposed to fill it until it overflows out of the side fill hole; when my transmission was leaking fluid and got low you can actually hear slight whine just as you're describing. The sound has got to be from the gears meshing.

Also, what brand/viscosity fluid did you use?

That's what I was using too but refilled with regular 10w-30. You think you can try Honda MTF or at least draining some of the fluid and filling the rest with regular 10w-30 oil?
