So I decided to buy a TV finally. I wanted something decent, not too crazy.. but just a decent TV for gaming and movies. Picked up one of these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889101196&Tpk=Sharp Aquos 40

Got it at Best Buy (open box) for $650. Love it. Hooked the desktop and the XBOX to it and its been pretty nice so far. I still need to get an HDMI cable for the XBOX and also a Blue Ray player.

Pimp. Seems like a lot of people are hooking up their desktops to their TVs now.

buyer beware
best buy labels their DISPLAY models as open box

almost bought an open box until i found out it'd been playing on the wall from 9 till 9 7 days a week for god knows how many months

Well, I did buy the warranty in case anything goes wrong.

Next up is some sort of speakers for this setup, its in my basement and there's nothing down here at the moment. Any suggestions? I do have decent skills with electronics so I'm sure piecing something together could be an option?

Ironic, my open box tv lasted 10 years.

The best day to buy any high end electronics is Black Friday if you dont mind waiting. But hell research before hand and get there early and you get a hell of a deal. My friend got a $1500 tv for $1000. 1/3 off, I'll sit around and wait for that.

I just scored a TV that goes for 1200 on eBay for 650 out the door. No need to wait IMO, just keep your eyes open. The warranty at Best Buy supposedly covers just about everything in the book, so we'll see.

First question is how much you want to spend? Then go from there...there is a post about my Surrond Sound Setup that simply rocks the house.....

Yeah but a few months after Christmas when the new models come out you could find the same deal or if not a better deal on a tv. My Sony tv I got in April cheaper than it was in the xmas season. I miss Tweeter, in Feb and March they would clear out last years models of everything. I got a brand new in the box $400 Polk center channel for $158.

After some research, I went with this home theater setup from newegg:

Newegg.com - LG LHB953 Network Blu-ray Disc 5.1-Channel Home Theater System

Excited to hear it, should be here in a week.

Thoughts?

I think that system is definately going to suffer for sound quality.....Atleast go with A Sony system if you really want a home theater in a box with a blue ray player...

Sony HTSS360 Component HTIB with BDPS360 Bluray and APC Home Theater AV Pro HDMI MM Cable plus Sony Best of Discovery Blu-ray Disc at TigerDirect.com

and FYI Tigerdirect has that exact system for $470 free shipping

LG LHB953 Network Blu-ray Home Theater System - 5.1 Channel, 1080p, HDMI, USB, iPod Dock, NetCast, 1000 Watts Total at TigerDirect.com

over anything sony makes, yes. at least it will last more than 91 days. 1 day after warranty, everything from sony breaks.

but i probably wouldn't buy that either....

Eh, this is my first setup. I'm still learning about home audio and video, and I'm only 19 so I'm sure this won't be the last I do.

I'll still probably be amazed by the quality and what not. I just came from a 26" Sharp TV (at least 8 years old) and the nicest TV we had in the house prior to this was the 32" Sony bubble-style TV in the living room with the old school sound system. This is the first Blu-Ray player I have ever owned, so we'll see how it goes.

you should still return it and buy it from tigerdirect and save $130
