i'v got a all motor set up b20 vtec...i got crane stage1 cams im pretty sure they're about the same size as typeR.when i first put them in i didn't adjust valves it ran great 13.60@100mph.. my valve train was i little loud so i put my valve lash to spec and my vtec stops working but if you make them a little sloppy my vtec works.......WHY????

what head are you using and what did you set the valve lash to?

IN:0.17-0.22(0.007-0.009)
EX:0.22-0.27(0.009-0.011)

Those are the specs you're using when vtec doesnt engage right?

i did let it run to get to temp so i could check the timing i set the valve lash the first time .006/.008 then i tried .007/.008

might check the LMAs. They might be going bad. Just push em down. If they come back they're okay if they stay down they you know they're bad. B16's are notorious for this issue. I wouldnt think it would cause vtec not to engage but wierder shit has happened.

They are 20-25 bucks a piece to replace and there are 8 of them.

If you dont know what you're looking for, they're the things in between each pair of valve. Slightly towards the center of the head. Look like nipples (the big eraser kind that are oh so much fun).

like i said before when i set them to spec the car runs fine but its like i have no vtec no tone change no nothing but if i back them off a little it works i dont want to ruion my head

id set them to spec and check the LMAs. they are usually the culprit in b16's when people hear a 'valve tick'. probably better that your lash is right even if vtec doesnt work. keeps your engine running.

so i don't under stand why my vtec works when the lash is backed off but when they're at spec it doesn't is that something to do with my lma's

It COULD possibly be you LMA's causing the issue. I'd imagine that the arms cant lock together if the LMA isnt keeping the arm in contact with the lobe. that's all purely speculation, but i believe that is the purpose of LMAs. Never really thought to ask to be honest and google is kind of dark on the subject.

do you know for a fact vtec isnt working? or do you just not feel or hear it?

vec is supposed to be smooth..if your engine is running perfect and the vtec hasnt been messed with then im guessing its working properly...if your unsure..hook up a light inline with the solenoid wire and take it for a drive..if it lights up then your good..

what you could do is hook up a volt gauge real quick to your vtec solenoid and if the needle moves when vtec kicks in then it's working. I've seen a few guys do this, they call it their "vtec gauge" but it's just to make sure everything is working fine
