My name is Byron.
Been contemplateing gettting rid of the EF and building an old-school air-cooled, my old man has been been into VWs since he was my age and has quite the know-how when it comes to them, not to mention a slew of extra parts. There has been an old Bug for sle down the road for about a week or so, just a shell, no motor, no trans for $600, (my dad has two extra trannies and an extra motor) and I would love to build one, lets face it, it would be way cooler than the EF, I just cant decide.

Ditch this ratrod,

For something like this, not such a radical chop though, you get the idea.

i would rather have 1 clean dd and a motorcycle. never been a fan of rat rods.

if i were to have a project car, i would make something full race. whether it be drag, drift or track.

If the $600 bug is in decent shape buy it, get it running, clean it up, and flip it for a few grand. Those things are expensive as shit for some reason.

because there are a lot of idiots that think a primered and chopped piece of shit painted flat black is 'fuckin' badass man'.
I wasn't talking rat rod. I was talking a bug in stock/near stock form. Satin black looks right on the right car. Flat black, chopped, primered looks dumb on all cars.

it's because you can't do anything with it. put a b18 with a good suspension and tires on it then take it to the track and tell me it's boring.

anything will be boring if it just sits in your yard.

I had a LS in it for a while, swapped to a B16 after the LS scattered.

It sounds as if you've never driven one. One of the most fascinating aspects is knowing that you've cut and welded so many things to get the vehicle to look and feel how you want it. I am a great welder and relatively skilled fabricator but still felt nervous for my life whenever I drove my truck faster than 50 mph. It is invigorating.
The unfinished feel inspires something in you...

Also, doing a chop the right way is a skill reserved to a small percentage of the population, whereas any douche-nozzle with his dad's 75 piece Craftsman tool set can do a Civic engine swap, etc.

When I built mine, I actually just bought all the parts and locked them in the garage with the car. When I came back in the morning the car had put itself together.

Byron, your EF isn't rat, it is ratty. There is a difference. Definitely buy the bug. Throw a reliable 150 WHP in it and air it. Get it to lay running board. Do a flat pastel color instead of black because, it's true, every doucher thinks flat black is kewl. Good luck

practicality + functionality = win

a car is worthless if i'm scared to go 50mph in it.

if i can't commute, race, or even get it registered and licensed, it's not worth my time or money. just my .02.
