As far as a system goes, it stayed in the lime light for a very long time with really only visual upgrades. I still have my big gray one and I have never had an issue. That's a lot more than I can say about any other system I have owned.
 
The original was green/black on the screen, what helped it going was the plethera of classic games that could be played on it like Mario Brothers. Another reason it stayed in the lime light for so long was when it went to gameboy color. I think my brother ended up with three of them until the DS came out, then he ended up with three of those.
 
I think I tossed my gameboy when I moved but it still worked fine.
Countless hours spent on that thing.
It was the best thing for long car trips.
