On my iphone there is an option to make it so that it levels the sound across songs.
My Nano has this feature. Look for "Sound check", and turn it on. By default I believe it's turned off.
Edit: noticed I was a little late. Anyways, it gives you a description in iTunes.
Yup. You can do it for free in iTunes. You can change the songs via iTunes.
Under Edit -> Preferences - > Playback -> Sound Check.
Not sure how I did it, but I had the same problem, clicked around on iTunes, and now they all play at the same level. Before I could barely hear one, then the next would deafen me.As far as I know, Itunes doesn't change the volume level on the MP3 file itself, just normalizes it on the itunes front-end.
I should note that MP3gain is freeware, easily located via google.
