my b16/89 hatch, the drivers axle is loose in the intermediate shaft, its a brand new axle and has been this way sence install. appeares to be not pushed in all the way but i tapped it with a hammer to no avail. it just makes a noise and wiggles, no leakes either... btw its a 90-93 axle with 90-93 int shaft.

i never thaught of that, but it sounds possable.. i hope not though i just put that tranny in there..

ok, tore it all apart, axles are perfect no messed up splines, both were seated properly.. and output shaft splines look great also, no signs of wear and all seemed tight ... am i over looking something here? is there soposed to be any movement in axles at all?

This happened to me, Its a bad tranny dif. soon the axle will pop out and spill about a quart of oil everywere and make driving your car impossible.

Its also caused by wheel hop. cheapest rout is buy a new tranny unless you know how to work with em.

seriously doubt thats it, the drivers side axle goes into a half shaft, and the half shaft is tight(doesnt wobble/move any). plus the diff seems tight from what i can feel with the axles out.

Pasenger side axle is what the diff hooks to and you cant feel a bad diff with your fingers.

Put the passanger axle in the tranny and try to wiggle it at the base, If it has a lot of play......your tranny is trash.

The half shaft dosent connect directly to your diff unless you have a LSD tranny.

how much play is to much? and what would make both axles loose? my driver side has play also how could that be if the axle is in the half shaft and not the tranny?

if the diff bearings are bad it will howl and wine. it will sound like a diff in a school bus you would know if the diff bearings were bad.

then where might it connect to then

quit spreading information that is wrong they do connect dirrectly to the diff they connect to the spider gears in side the diff to be exact and lsd diffs have some sort of spider gear also.

I guess what I was trying to say is that the half shaft dosent get power like a LSD tranny would, because most of the power is directed to the passanger side.

Also it wasnt the bearings, it was ALL the diff, you have to replace it if your axle has too much play because the axle will come out of place. It happened to me with my last tranny. It was cause by wheel hop.

Im only trying to shine light on the situation because I know how much of a big pain in the ass it could be. It could also cause you to lose it and spin out when your axle comes out and spills a quart of oil on your tires.

I bet his car shakes at about 65-70 mph too.

I never had a problem with my drivers side axle, It was always my passanger side axle. At first it would just wiggle and I would feel vibrations when driving. then later the axle would come out of place and spill a ton of oil.

I would check and make sure your halfshaft is bolted up correctly if it wiggles.

if you can move it more than a 1/4 inch side to side, and it looks like your axle isnt in all the way in, then I would say something is wrong.

Im not saying I know exactly what it is but Im saying I know what happened to me and what was wrong with my tranny.

well, it doesnt move more than a 1/4 inch, its less than that, but im almost posative it being loose is causing my noise/vibrations, it makes a noise when i let off the gas/like when the rpm's drop suddenly... i know my ball joints arent the greatest but i dont think that can cause this.. my axles are on a decent angle because of the swap and the cheaper mounts make the tranny sit forward a good bit could this be the cause? i always thaught there was to be no axle movement ?

what type of noise dose it make? dose it make like a low howl? or is it like a grinding noise?

Can you pull the axle out by hand if you tug on it? do you see any oil leaks? how heavy are the vibrations?

its like a vibration you can feel pretty bad, the noise its not a clunking noise nor a squeeking noise its not a wheel bearing howl either, and no the axles dont come out easily i had to pry them as usual..and i have a leaky axle seal but only on one side and its because i never changed them when i put the tranny in

ok look at the splines on the end of your axle they usualy strip out when the axle works loose while driving also when you reinstall the axle take the snap ring off and spread it out so it fits in tighter if the axle is not messed up on the end and you spread out the clip you should be fine.

ive already done that^ i tore it apart pulled axles out and splines on the axles and the tranny looked like they did when i put it together, perfect. and the ring/clip is keeping them in there tight also

check the 1/8th in of spline by the snap ring i bet it is striped off from coming lose and it will never stay in now
