Is it worth it to fix my laptop?

Dell Latitude D800. Bought it in 2004 or 2005.
Bad
-Needs a new screen inverter. Its been replaced once already in 2006 or 2007.
-On/off button doesn't always work and it doesn't always stay on. I'm pretty sure it's related.
Good
-Don't have a problem with the speed. Its still plenty fast for what I use it for.
-Repairing it will be cheaper than replacing it.
-Has some stuff on the hard drive I want (Old pictures, old school work, etc.).

I know a Geek Squad supervisor so it will cost me about $50 plus any needed parts. I may even get a free version of 7 out of the deal.

So should I get it fixed? I have a desktop but its kind of slow. I also want to get a net book, but I don't have the extra cash right now. Plus, I'd still need to get the old stuff off of the hard drive.

Is there a way to use the parts from the laptop to make the desktop faster? Because once I have the net book, the laptop will never get used. I still need to use the desktop for certain things so the added speed would be nice and I could use a desktop until I get the cash for a net book.

Opinions or ideas?
 
If money is tight, why not just spend the $50 plus parts and keep rockin' the laptop? Financially, it makes more sense to do it that way.

How much are the parts you need to get? I've been pricing out net books lately, and I have seen some for $150-$200. If you are going to spend anything more than $100 on parts before that $50 in labor, it might just be a better bet to wait it out and get the net book. Why spend the money twice for a temporary fix?
 
Why don't you just buy the parts yourself and fix it? While you're in there you can also clean that on/off button.

Inverter is cheap. Like 15 bucks. I just don't know what's wrong with the on/off switch. I've taken it apart and cleaned it. It almost seems like there is a loose wire or something.

But could the laptop parts be used on the desktop?

save the money you would put into it for the replacement netbook and just use the slower desktop

if you can try to do a clean reinstall on it... it will speed it up a lot without all the bullshit it has collected over the years
 
You might be able to buy an external enclosure to put the laptop drive in, that would let you pull your data off it and then use it as extra storage space. I would go that route till you save up enough for a new lappy, you can get lower to midrange models for SUPER cheap anymore.

That's how it was set up the last time the inverter went. Last thing I had fixed before the warranty expired.

Guess I'll just save up for the net book and let a computer guru handle speeding up the desktop and/or getting stuff off the laptop.
