Cliffs for the lazy:
-There have been a lot of problems recently with off campus parties(read:fraternity) in the residential neighborhoods that surround the school.
-School feels criminally charging and fining anyone who holds or attends such parties is a smart idea.

Just another step taken in recent years to run Greek life and social behavior all together away from the school. Before I even graduated, outside advisers called the policies and rules implemented against Greek life ridiculous. Even before this, they were trying to stop college kids from partying.

The funniest part is that the recent problems are the school's fault. When I graduated, all the Greeks and basically all the parties were on two streets, Main and Eben. It was all college age people and there were few problems. Well the school, with help of eminent domain, kicked us all out for a "redevelopment project". Thus forcing over 10 Greek organizations into the surrounding neighborhoods. Thus causing all the problems the school is facing now.

They tried similar shit like this at my college. As it ended up they were just blowing smoke.

I have a feeling it's like that. But they will screw up a few students lives and be caught up in red tape when everyone sues them. Even wrongful suits will waste the schools money.

Hmmmm...... Might get some lawsuits out of this one.

Our school has some interesting policies where I live, but there are "greek" rows across from the campus and are very much supported because of the alumni donations.

I sympathize with you, however, put yourself in the place of the non-school residents. I'm sure some of the claims of destruction of property and littering are pretty accurate.

It's just not that cut and dry and you know it. Having attended a school that was heavily integrated into the local neighborhood, I have seen and been involved in disturbing other people's lives. It's about respect.

I don't feel a bit of sympathy for any Greek organization. I have never met a frat who was not loud, arrogant, and relatively destructive. Some of my good friends are in a frat and had struggled for years just to get campus recognition because of their destructive pasts.

After all the stories you have told on here about fights and other general debauchery you can't honestly tell me that this wasn't even slightly warranted.

Hey I've done it. I've been issued multiple citations by local police based on loud destructive parties and neighbor complaints.

The people that live in these neighborhoods DO need to consider the fact that they are living in a college area and, if they really don't like it, should probably move to a quieter part of town.

I agree with UNDR8D. The college probably should have known better then to just expect the frats to chill out and quit partying when they moved them to the more residential areas, but at the same time, but they are within their right to pull the old "attending this school is a privilege" card and to impose any rules or take any actions they deem necessary to preserve the college's good name...

While I agree with you both that it is slightly warranted, I first have to present some history.

Greek life came to Rowan(then Glassboro State) in the 70s. While the organizations were recognized by the school, the school has never helped us out at all. Because of this, Eben Street became an unofficial Greek Row. Greeks took over all houses on the street, empty lots were bought and built on by alumni of the organizations. When the street was full, it spilled over onto Main Street. Main Street was a combination of empty lots, store fronts, and houses. Houses got filled. Since we were surrounded by storefronts at night, it was never a problem.

We have petitioned for an official Greek Row for YEARS. We even bit the bullet and said it would be alcohol free. The school wasn't having it. Instead they took all our property to build a pedestrian university street will Starbucks and Barnes & Noble and shit. It's been like this for years. They screw over current students in order to attract new ones(tripling upper classmen in dorms while freshmen get brand new ones). They advertise that they have a "busseling" Greek life, but dick them over every chance they get.

Another fraternity, DKE, had a rich alumni. Built a beautiful house on Main Street. The school has attempted to "take" the house on multiple ocassions. They always lost in court. They have a party and one of-age member ended up in the hospital. They pulled their local charter. Their national still supports them. They are still a national fraternity.

My fraternity was founded on a Tuesday. During pledging, all the brothers and pledges wear a shirt and tie on Tuesdays. We were brought up on judicial charges for hazing.

A fraternity and sorority were having a mixer. A member got really drunk and fell down some steps and broke his eye socket. Both organizations lost their charters.

This happened. Greek disiplinarian met with the other guy, witnesses at the scene, and my fraternity's president. Never even e-mailed me to set up a meeting. At the time I was the president of the Inter-Fraternal Council. I was to be kept in the loop with all fraternity disipline. I finally went into this guy's office unannounced with my lawyer to discuss it. It's no doubt in my mind that he was trying to make an example of me. Expell me with months to go in my senior year.

We have a great relationship with the local PD. we are their favorite and most cooperative fraternity. We hold fundraisers and stuff with them. I think the school hates the fact that we have this relationship.

They have been trying to kill us for years, yet wouldn't have so many things without us. The homecoming parade is 95% Greek. Alumni that come back for Homecoming are 95% Greek. The majority of donations to the school are from former Greeks. Greek Week attracts huge crowds. Every organization holds fundraisers and charity drives. We are the school philanthrophy.

The school needs a President who was a Greek at Rowan, or any school for that matter. It's a joke. The Greeks didn't change the way they acted when they moved off of Eben and Main. If anything, they calmed down. Like I said before, the school made a mistake and turned around and are blaming it on us. It's becoming a tradition at Rowan.

That does clear things up a little bit. Honestly, in 2009, unless you are a bunch of Mathlete Pointdexters, your frat is going to be seen as out of control and detrimental to the school's image.

I guess the only thing you can do is what has already been done...try to combine your debauchery with philanthropy. Throw a party called kegs for kids and donate all the money to a local children's hospital or something. Of course, the president would probably think you were throwing a party for the local middle school kids. You'd get arrested lol

Or get your alumni to donate a shit ton of money to both and become a alumni celebrity perse.

Exactly. ALL the fraternities are in trouble now. Fraternities that were never in trouble before. Don't get me wrong, mine was always somewhere in the middle, but now it seems like all of us have gone off the deep end. No one's behavior has changed for the worse.

I wouldn't get arrested, I don't visit a lot at the moment in time. Broke and what not. But the idea of being an alumni of these organizations is that you have something to come back to. I just don't want to see the day when I don't.

As far as kegs go, Rowan University has a no kegs policy in Greek housing. And by definition by the school, a Greek house is any one resided in by ONE member of an organization, not just the "main house". There was one house on Eben that represented 5 organizations. Isn't that awesome? They impliment rules in housing they don't own or pay for. Not a huge deal for us though. TKE national has rules against kegs. We still have them, just not during open parties. Hell, the house I lived in for most of college had a double kegorator.

Basically, because they pull the knoose so tight, we are forced to find ways around it.

They tried their hardest to make that hard hitting and controversial but it fell so far short of the mark...status fucking quo = bfd

Oh yea. Terrible. I could have done the story better with a crew of kindergarten kids. By the way, don't they need permission to show somebody's face? Because they didn't have it.

You do not need permission to print a person's name and/or face unless it is for monitary gain like an ad for a company. Then a model release is needed. But you better be damn sure what you print is not fabricated or malice in intent because you could be in for a world of hurt.

Well they didn't use anybody's name and they didn't use the fraternity's name either.

Unfortunately for them, this has had the opposite effect. Most of our older alumni were unaware of the situation. Now they are aware of the whole story. Some of which are very influential in the area and with the school.
