AT&T dead last in Consumer Reports wireless survey : Ben Patterson : Yahoo! Tech

Respondents in the annual survey hammered AT&T in just about every category, from voice service to the frequency of dropped calls. The big winner: AT&T's nemesis, Verizon Wireless.Covering about 50,000 wireless chatters in 26 major cities, the Consumer Reports survey had little in the way of good news for AT&T, which has been taking a shellacking in recent weeks from Verizon and its devilishly effective "There's a map for that" ad campaign.

According to AllThingsDigital, the exclusive iPhone carrier ranked lowest in overall consumer satisfaction in 19 of the 26 surveyed cities, ranging from New York and San Francisco to (as FierceWireless points out) Atlanta, Cleveland, and Houston. Verizon, meanwhile, ranked first in all 26 cities in the Consumer Reports survey. Ouch.

The overall satisfaction scores over all 26 cities puts Verizon on top with a score of 75, according to AppleInsider. T-Mobile comes in next with 70 (buoyed by its "superior" customer service), with Sprint trailing with 67 (due to "poor customer support") and AT&T pulling up the rear with 66.

This isn't the first time this year that AT&T has had a poor showing in a wireless survey. Back in May, the annual American Customer Satisfaction Index gave AT&T a 67 out of 100, good for third place among the four biggest U.S. carriers (Verizon was first, Sprint came in last) but also representing the steepest drop in the group.

As you might expect, AT&T's worst marks in the Consumer Reports came in such categories as "service availability," "circuit capacity," "dropped-call frequency," and "voice service," according to AllThingsDigital. That sounds an awful lot like the earlier ACSI survey, which dinged AT&T for "complaints about slow and spotty performance."

So, how does AT&T respond to the survey? A rep told AllThingsDigital that the carrier "appreciate and value all customer feedback," and argues that the "surest indication of customer satisfaction is churn" (or subscriber turnover), which for "postpaid" customers was "just 1.17 percent."

Huh ... so now I'm supposed to think about AT&T's churn rate the next time my iPhone drops a call? I think I liked those Luke Wilson ads better.

So, what about you: Who's your most/least favorite wireless carrier? Satisfied with the carrier you have now

verizon is my least favorite. all my friends complain because im not on that service.

TMO is decent, great on wifi, horrible service areas.

AT&T seems to be great. on the wifi it works well, 3G is very fast for browsing the web, and the iphone hasnt dropped a call yet.

Yeah, Verizon just seems to suit me. T-mobile is too teeny boppy, Sprint is too business like, AT&T seems to be about my next favorite one, simply becuase of the iPhone, but their coverage at least looks like shit. They're all overpriced IMO.

If the Iphone come sto Verizon, rest assure Verizon would be your most favorite....People only like ATT for the Ifailphone.....

I'm on Sprint its really to bad they are probably going to get bought up in a couple of years though. I have been very happy with their service the past 7 years though. AT&T needs to focus on shoring up their network and not butt pumping its customers for every dime they can. Just my opinion though.

not happening. i'll stick with either sprintel/tmo/at&t since that is what is free for me.

I've never had any problems with tmo as far as dropping calls or getting service everywhere I go with the exception of their 3g service in more rural areas. My only complaint was they've been behind the times as far as phone technology in the past, but seem to be catching up now.

If I were to switch I would go to Verizon. No experience with Sprint other than a few friends that have always complained about dropping calls.

I'm on AT&T and it sucks here in the "Last Frontier". Don't even bother trying to make a call during peak hours, it won't happen, or it will drop quickly. I started using data and it was decent when they charged by the KB, but after I bought the unlimited data plan, my speed went down to straight worthless. I'm on the EDGE network, because AT&T is waiting until the lower 48 gets 4G, then they'll give us their used 3G equipment. Maintaining the status quo of staying 5 years behind in technology. We have a local carrier partnered with verizon, and they have great 3G coverage here. I will be switching to them once my contract runs out, hopefully they will have the droid by then.

the only thing i hate about verizon is that all the new phones i want you go to have a stupid data plan

They do now and it is called droid.

Anyway, AT&T blows. You guys don't realize how many calls/texts you miss. I had problem with this over the summer a lot. My friends would bitch at me for not answering their calls/texts sometimes. I'd swear I never got them and that they never called/text me. They would show me their out going and there it was. The same would happen to my outgoing and them never receiving it. I changed phones and sim cards and it didn't fix it.And it isn't because of where I live or anything. I'm in one of those hot spots on the map ;x.

How is this pwnage? 1st place verizon only at 75% satisfaction?

When the smartest kid in your class is a "C" student, you know your in the American public uneducation system.

I use AT&T for my cellular, and I can attest to this as well. I'm also currently using their "U-Verse" cable and web service, and it sucks balls. It doesn't work half the time. I'm about to switch to something else.

So yes, AT&T = garbage
