i need help on my b18b1 turbo build....im looking for 300-350 hp and want it to be reliable and daily driven, so any advise would be great. btw this is my first build!....help me out from step 1 please. wat should i do first bring it to the machine shop? wat is needed at the machine shop and wat is not, im on a $2k budget but maybe can go a lil over but thats not including the tune after the build is complete. so please guide me in the rite directions base on my budget plus wat i want......thanks in advance

Your budget is 2k to build JUST the bottom end? Or 2k for the bottom end, turbo setup, head work, etc?

I want to know the answer to this question as well, because if your TOTAL budget is 2 grand AND you're having a shop do the work, then you might as well just quite while you're ahead. 2 grand is NOT going to get you a built, reliable, 350 horse Honda engine built by a shop...not even close...

for 2k you should lower you hp goals and use the stock block. with 2k you should be shooting for about 250hp which if tuned right will be very streetable and reliable if you don't beat the shit out of it everyday... 250hp will be plenty while you build another setup and drop that in by the time you get bored and need more power. good luck and post pics of the build....

happy new years my honda peoples...lol..

anyways 2k is gonna be just for the block which most likely covers the low comp wiseco pistons, eagle rods,(rings too), polishing the Ls crank, new ACL race bearings, getting it bored out maybe to 82mm-84mm not sure( wat u guys think for turbo), hot tanked, cleaned, etc....maybe even going to be over 2k but im in no rush cuz i want this build to be strong and reliable...but of course i want it done asap but u kno, wen u rush it blows...lol.
so with this setup can i just slap on a regular non vtec head on wit maybe some camgears for timing and bolt-ons would run ok till i get more money or the motor not going to run rite wit a built block......and another thing if i go ls vtec turbo would the theory of ls vtec blowing up would be da same in my case if i slap a stock vtec head on wit again some camgears on my built ls block for turbo..let me kno guys as i stated this is my first build

im sorry i havent put up any pix yet cuz i aint got no space on my girls camera, and she hatin...lol.... but i'll try to post up something wen i get a chance.....

btw i got a pretty good idea on honda motors and its not like its hard but wat special tools do i need to build the block myself,(just trying to save some money) or would it be better for the shop to do it

take the bottom end to a well known machine shop
tell them to use OEM honda bearings

yes the ls vtec will be fine, plenty of people run that setup. its a powerhouse

why OEM honda bearings, why not ACL race bearings......is there any difference?, how about price difference?

theres a reason honda engines run forever
just trust me on the oem bearings. theyre just as durable as acl's and will last longer if the tolerances are done correctly

it also saves you from the shop having to line bore your block to get all the clearances uniform. honda has different color codes of bearings which are different thicknesses to eliminate the line boring, saves you some $$$

as far as price difference, i think oems are going to run you about 15 bucks more when all is said and done. thats right about what mine cost

yo how hard is it to do dat all urself, i wanna do it myself, i wanna learn, let me kno
wat tools i need?

it is pretty difficult to get everything right
there are guys that have been working at machine shops for 15+ years and they still make mistakes from time to time

basic tools would be:
torque wrench
assembly lube (something moly based would work)
a clean shop to keep dust and dirt out of the engine
garbage bag to cover the engine when youre not working on it
a shop to hot tank the engine and components
dial micrometer to measure widths/circumfrances
feeler gauge
plastigauge
set of oem bearings
some sort of anti-seize
thats a pretty basic start

im pretty sure u just gave me some tools i need to grab, so exactly wat do i need to basically rebuild a head.??.by removing valve springs, retainer, valves, and anything else im suppose to take out and replace since im in there.
another Qs, i already remove the cam holder thingy and the cams wit gears still attach so wen i try to see if it would sit bakk in rite, the cams wouldnt sit rite wit both the "UP" on the gears pointing up.....so i spin it alittle and they sit good but wen i chekk the gears, EXH side facing up but more towards the left, and INT side facing up but more towards the right so its basically making a Y, dont kno if dat make any sence but wat u think about that, do i need to get both the cam gears to face directly UP wen i bolt down the cam holder..
lol..another Qs wat u call that thing that u can easily pull off and is on top of the valve springs?, if i take em all off, do i need to make sure they all go bakk where they came from or it doesnt matter where, they all da same not like the cam holder thingy where they need to be put bakk on the same spot where i take it out from.,. can i spray chemical inside my head under the valve cover and then clean it wit water and soap or something, or its not good to spray anything in ur head?....i should get a manual first before i start:D.....thanks!

how u post pix??? do i clikk on that mountain thingy...i already did and it ask for the URL for the pix and i dont even kno wat the hell it is....somebody help please wit this pix thing

IMO Have a machine shop put it together. You can take it all apart and save some cash but look to find some machine shop that has rebuilt Honda motors before.

To post pictures....put them on photobucket or something first them upload them from there to here with the URL

to rebuild a head you need something to remove the valvesprings and retainers. its called a valve spring compressor and it is kind of hard to find to fit the honda valve springs.

as far as the cams facing the right direction, you worry about that when you set the timing. get the cams in there and get the caps tight. then you can rotate them and get everything facing the right way

those are the rocker arms. it doesnt really matter where they go but id recommend keeping the exhaust side and intake side in order at least (dont put the exhaust rocker arms on the intake side, or the intake side on the exhaust side) reason is that they have different clearances for valve adjustments and mixing them up could do harm to your engine if you let it go without adjusting them

i wouldnt recommend you spraying any sort of chemical in the valvetrain. chances are you wont get all of it back out and you could end up thinning out the oil and cause damage to bearings

Right click your mouse on a picture and a menu will come up. Click on "Properties". Then you should see one that says "URL Address". That's the URL, copy and paste it...
