Some friends and I are running a 86 CRX in the 24 Hours of Lemons. Our car came with a non-FI EW engine that made approximately 7 hp before it died in the middle of our race last year. So, instead of fixing it, we have purchased a 87 Integra with a D16A1 and a 5-speed and we plan on installing both in our CRX.

The mechanical side of the swap doesn't seem like it will be too tough. The car is completely stripped and all unecessary parts (A/C, etc.) will be removed from the engine. I've found lots of helpful info and think we could have it done in a solid days work.

My fear is that the wiring will be a huge pain. I need to know what kind of wiring issues I am going to have when installing this engine/trans into the CRX.

Engine Mounts: Use the stock CRX mounts on the rear cross member & front timing-belt side. Use an Integra tranny mount for the tranny. The CRX tranny mount will make the motor sit crooked if you use it.

Axles: Use a complete set of 86-89 Integra axles including the intermediate shaft.

Knuckle/hub assembly: In order to use an 86-89 Teg’ engine + transmission, you have to use the 86-89 Integra knuckle/spindle assembly so that you can utilize the Integra 3-piece axles. The 86-89 Integra axles DO NOT plug into 84-87 Civic/CRX knuckle/spindle’s.

Shift linkage: Use a complete 86-89 Integra shift linkage.

Chassis wiring harness: Use the chassis wiring harness from 1G CRX Si

Engine wiring harness: Use the 1G CRX/3G Civic Si engine wiring harness. Plugs right into the 86-87 Integra sensors, injectors, & distributor.

Distributor & ECU: Make sure you use an 86-87 (not 88-89) Integra PG7 ECU & Distributor.

Fuel system: The D16A1 fuel injection requires a pressurized fuel system that the carbureted cars do not have. You will need to change the entire fuel system including tank, all lines, pump, filter, etc.

Thanks jli, all that information will save me a lot of time. I have a few questions though:

Engine wiring harness: Use the 1G CRX/3G Civic Si engine wiring harness. Plugs right into the 86-87 Integra sensors, injectors, & distributor.
Distributor & ECU: Make sure you use an 86-87 (not 88-89) Integra PG7 ECU & Distributor.

Can I just use the ECU, Distributor, Harness, etc. out of the Integra? There is nothing left in the CRX that would need to be plugged into an ECU. If using the Si wiring harness will simplify things I would much rather go that route.

Fuel system: The D16A1 fuel injection requires a pressurized fuel system that the carbureted cars do not have. You will need to change the entire fuel system including tank, all lines, pump, filter, etc.

I was just planning on installing an electrical fuel pump in-line. I didn't realize I needed to change the tank and everything else. Will the tank from the integra fit? If not, I will probably go the fuel cell route.

I'm jealous. I've always wanted to do lemons..

It's pretty awesome. It can be a lot more expensive than you might first expect. You can only spend $500 on the car, but all the other crap (roll cage, tires, brakes, etc.) really adds up. It's still cheaper than any other form of car racing though. And way more fun.

About that fuel tank...

I pulled it out of the car tonight. It seems like I should be able to modify it. Can I just replace the fuel lines with high pressure lines, use the same diameter hose/fittings for the send and return lines, and install a electric fuel pump in-line?
