Just grabbed an Autometer tach model 3700 and was wondering how to install it. There are 4 wires coming out of the back. Red, White, Green, and Black. Where do they all go? And since the tach has an internal lamp, do i need to manfacture a switch to turn it on and off as well?

Thanks for help.

this is how i install my tach:

i oringally wired it up my tach to a toggle switch for speed purposes but then i changed my mind.

I decided that I didn't care if the background light would be on all the time so I wired it to my cig lighter (comes on only when key is on)

So I took apart the center console, and Got to by the cig lighter, then I spliced into the white wire with blue pin stripe, then into one of the black (grounds)

then i soldered the white + red + into the blue/white line. then the blakc wire goes to the ground

then feed the green wire into the engine bay.

I opted to put it directly to the dizzy so I'd get the best reading

Take yer dizzy cap off and then make a notch in one of the rubber pieces so you can put the cap back on w/o getting water in therea nd stuff. Then run the green wire to the neg side of the coil. turn yer key on and make sure the ligths come on, then start it and try it out

this was done on a
1991 CRX Si
DOHC ZC

Thanks dood,
EXACTLY what I was looking for.
:)

Ok, just so I dont get ahead of myself here.....(Funny, Im only installing a Tach!), Red wire-Straight to the battery
Black Wire- Chassis grounded
Green- spliced to Blue wire in the distributor (Any more specific?)
White- To positive wire on the dash light dimmer

Will this setup work? Will it matter that my 12V Power source is on all the time and not through a switch? Will it draw power all the time, or will it even matter? Should I hook it up to the cig lighter instead like someone else mentioned? Will the dimmer idea work?

Going at it this evening, so any help is appreciated!

Thanks again guys.

Actually, autometer suggests wiring up the red wire to something that turns on when your ignition is on. I wouldn't wire it directly to your battery. I don't think it will be a large drain on it if you do, but autometer suggests wiring to an item that is turned on with the ignition. I'm not sure if the cig lighter only comes on with the ignition or not, so you might want to wire it to your radio or something like that.

As for the green wire, you need to wire it up to the blue wiring coming off your dizzy. Just make sure you make a solid connection to this wire. I would suggest some solder and heat-shrink to make sure the connection doesnt have any problems.

The white wire you should tap in to your dash lighting. I tapped mine into the dimmer switch so that I could also dim the tach lighting as well. Generally the tach isnt that bright so it may not make a difference to you. I'm actually thinking about just running it straight to the wiring without the dimmer so that I can have my guages and my VAFC stand out when I dim my dash lights.

You might find the following links from the autometer site helpful with your install: (you will need acrobat reader to view these)

Blue Wire on the Dizzy (scroll down till you come to honda/acura)

Good luck with the install.

The cig lighter in my 91 teg only comes on when the ignition is on. Prolly the same for all hondas, but I am not sure. Depending on where you want to mount the tach, you could just wire it to your ignition fuse wiring down by the driver side kick panel

Hey thanks for all the help so far!

About the Blue wire I'm connecting to from the distributor, is it this one?????

Is this the right one? There are other blue wires but they all have stripes on them....this was the only BLUE wire coming from the dist.

On the right track?

Let me know.....I have everything all apart right now :)

Wow, five and a half years, I wonder if he ever got his tach working?

The funny part is, this guy took the time to register for the site just to post an incomprehensible reply to a 5 year old thread. Nice!

ok i hook a tach up in my del sol everything works but the meter it doesnt move i connected it directly to the neg of coil but i noticed that the spring is missing out of the coil would that effect it not moving????

everybody knows about coil fluid dont they? you're supposed to change it with your turn signal fluid and vtec juice (where applicable)

:lmao:
