Hey all,
I'm new to the forums, but have been trolling many for the past few days about teg motor swaps.

I'd been driving a slightly modded Talon TSi for the past few years until it was stolen. Then just happened to pick up a 98 RS teg that was in good shape. But I've always been disappointed in how slow it is.

Unfortunately my timing belt just recently broke on it. Was going approximately 30-35mph, with it floored because i was merging onto a highway when it broke. Haven't been able to get it apart to find out what the extent of the damage is yet. Knowing my luck with cars, it'll be bad.

Either way I figured this might be a good opportunity to fix the issue and get more performance that I've been seeking. With economic times being as they are. I really don't want to jump in over my head on cost. I'd like to keep it very reasonable.

I've come across fairly inexpensive, lower mileage H22As with ECU and transmission for sale in my area. I understand the axle's need to be changed, and I'll lose my A/C. Just haven't done enough research I guess yet, to know what other costs would be involved on this swap.

My other obvious choice would be the B18C1 motor. This seems to be a much better option, being that it basically drops right in. My only concern here is that the affordable US version of this motor is still only 170HP to my understanding... While the H22A is 200(Please correct me if I'm wrong). But it seems like the extra work for better torque and 30 more HP might be worth the time, assuming the cost isn't ridiculous. I've never driven or ridden in a GSR, so I don't personally know how much quicker they are.

I've gotta make a decision either way pretty quickly, as the RS is my daily driver, and I'm stuck borrowing a gracious friends toy for the time being.

So I was hoping to get any possible feedback or suggestions from folks who have done one or both of these swaps. Pro's and con's. Extra costs involved(other than obvious parts =).

Apologize for this being so long, just wanted to give a rundown of my situation, and reasons and thoughts behind me wanting to do the swap.

Thanks to all in advance for any insight,

The b18c1 swap will be cheaper. It will be an easy drop in. Use your existing axles, mounts, shift linkage, and even trans (if you don't mind being slower. ls trannies have poor gearing for vtec engines). Just get an ecu and run wires for vtec and iab.

H22 swaps are getting cheap to buy. Then tack on a shift linkage, mounts, axles, and a moderate amount of fabrication (wiring, drilling, ect...) to get the job done. The car will be about a half second quicker in the 1/4 with this setup. All depends on what you want to spend and how mechanically inclined you are.

Thanks for the quick response. As far as the tranny goes. I forgot to mention my LS is currently automatic, which I'm gonna have to swap out. I'm sure that will be fun. So as farm as running any new linkage with the H22a... it's going to be have to be done regardless.

A half a second in 1/4 mile is quite a big diff just between naturally asp. 4 cylinder motors. I suppose I could always boost the B18C1 later down the road. How do you like that supercharger setup? Seems like it might make more since on a VTEC than a turbo.

Auto to manual swap will still be easier if you do the gsr swap. All you need are junkyard components that will bolt right up. The jrsc WAS nice before I sold it off. It won't make the peak power of a turbo'd motor, but it makes for a fast, responsive, torqey, and reliable DD.

Sorry I would have sent you a PM, but you must not be able to since you are new...

Aways, if you are looking for a gsr swap I know someone that is looking to get rid of one. Click the link in my sig.

Thanks for the reply,
That's quite a bit of front end damage ... Everything on that motor is okay? I think I'm might try to find something with a bit less mileage on it though.
