i wanna know how reliable A b20vtec/ Ls vtec are? can they be used 4 out of 7 days of the week? How much would they cost to build and swap into a EJ civic

a properly built and tuned lsvtec will be very reliable, and i would think for street driving a GSR trans would be the best choice. if you are giong to pay a shop to build it for you it will get into the thousands between parts and labor.

if you dont have the money to do a complete build, and just want to throw a vtec head on a stock ls bottom its not really worth it. you might as well just get a gsr motor.

bump - if your gonna build it then build it right

i built a few and i always used higher comp pistons, new water & oil pump, gasket kit, head bolts, spark plugs, sp wires, distributor

i also always bought b16 heads and used gsr cams - cheaper then a gsr head

be prepared to spend around 1k in parts but if done right it will be very reliable

LSV/B20V are reliable if it's built right I have built many LSV/B20V they are well worth it but can get expensive.

There's no such thing- every single LS/VTEC or B20/VTEC is a custom build. It all depends on the builder and what parts you pick to go into it. Don't let anyone tell you there's one particular price to do it.

x2
Here's one of my old builds that I actually got to take pictures of

I erased most pictures of when I had completed it which I also ran a 75 shot of nitrous. LSV build,GSR head,GSR manifold port matched to 68mm TB eliminated secondaries, supertech dual valve springs and titanium retainers,etc... and the list goes on but you get the idea.

Good luck

my b20vtec build cost a little over $4k with parts and labor (not including the engine itself)

Do you still remember the cost for the entire Build Monotech??

Not really because I used good quality parts for reliability and performance. When I build an engine for my cars I always do different set ups depending on what kind of power I'm looking for. I'm going to be building a B20V very soon ;)

you are talking about an all motor build right?

for the head you will need better cams, valve springs, and retainers at least. have the machine shop replace the valve seals and do a valve job to make sure they are seating nicely. unless you are really looking to spend some $$ and going for every last horsepower, i wouldnt mess with anything else in the head.

yea i'm lookin to go All-motor No turbos, I wanna car that will put up good number, but can still be semi-daily driven

200-220whp is a good realistic goal for a built lsvtec or b20vtec.

there are many many builds on the internet, do your research and you will see certain combinations of parts that work. copying someone elses successful build is not a bad idea.

how i would do it:
b20 block, 11.5:1 pistons, rods, new bearings, waterpump, oil pump, timing belt, seals, gaskets, etc. b16a head, cams, cam gears, dual valve springs, retainers, valve seals... if the budget allows there is more you can do to the head. you will need a good intake manifold, at least a 62mm throttle body, a nice header, nice 2.5" exhaust, a lighter flywheel and upgraded clutch, and most importantly some sort of engine management. you gotta have good tuning to be reliable and make 100whp per liter!

i didnt include a bunch of brand names because you should do the research. cam selection is important on an all motor build. if you are serious about a build, you should find what machine shop you are giong to use and talk to them about it. dont take shortcuts and find someone who can tune it good!
