Building my own box for a sub... thoughts?

My buddy wants to give me his stock sub out of his EVO X which is a 10in rockford. I am wondering what size box I should build for it. I have some MDF that I used over the summer to build some boxes for a home theater system left over that I would like to use. I am kinda at a loss as to what size to (dimensions) to go for because it isn't some high quality build, just something to create a good bass sound and hold the sub. I have done some research and I don't think that I am going to port the box as of now unless somebody else can influence my opinion. Any help on any of these fronts would be great.

thanks,

Blaze

PS- There seem to be a few styles that I could build- http://www.theestore.net/product_inf...cts_id=1470423 This looks a bit more tricky then this next one...

I would imagine the box one would be easier to build but which one is going to sound better?

you are not going to see a noticable sound difference from the shape of those boxes, assuming that they have equal air space... unless you were to place or aim them differently based on their shape

so dont worry too much about that

sealed is fine... easier to build... less of a pain to tune properly... and tends to sound better over a wider range

as far as the specs for the box... you should be able to find that on rockfords web site once you know the model of the speaker

you said that youve built boxes before so im assuming i dont need to stress the importance of making sure your joints are good and everything is well sealed

other than that, without more info on the speaker or what you want to put it in and where/how, there really isnt much to say

My friend has that sub. It doesn't sound too good IMO but if it's free and easy to build a box for, go for it look on Rockford. Com for dimentions

built it the way rockford wants you to. A ported box has frequency range than a sealed one. A ported box hit lower notes a sealed box can't, not only that but it becomes more efficient and less power is needed to produce more sound.

I would have a professional build one since they can make it louder than a simple built to spec box. Since you want to save money i then suggest you built a ported box built to rockford specs.

sorry but sealed sucks imo. I had the same sub/power combo and a ported box sounded way better. response was not noticable and it got lower and ALOT louder.

i was talking about my boston g-5 10's

of course my 13w7 doesnt have the response as those 10's.

He hasn't responded in over a month... only posted once. I doubt he'll come back and see this thread.

Anyway, go download a free program call WinISD Pro. It lets you play with all kinds of box parameters to get the output you want- just keep in mind that it maps out the ideal case response in a free area, not inside of a car- but you can tweak it to do that too. Factor in a typical 12dB/octave gain starting at about 60Hz going down for the car interior if you haven't figured out the response of your specific interior configuration.

thats the only sucky thing about the audio threads.....not popular enough move older threads down.

my bad CAL

No biggie. I'll be building a box for Katie's xB once I find an amplifier that's buried in the garage.... trying to go as cheap as possible. These threads are still interesting. :)

i should take a picture of my box and show it to you all. very cool. however, not ported. i still think it sounds good. ill try to snap a pic up tonight.

Got It. anyone interested in making me a box sized for my two 12' alpines, i could pay for good craftsmanship! but it would have to look very similar to mine and be sized to my Type S's. plus im not sure if i would want it ported or not....

Honestly, I prefer sealed. Ported has better low-end extension, but for the flattest response in a car- sealed is good.

I could spec out a box that would sound good, but I'm not going to build one. :)

here is my box. so if anyone can build one exactly like this i would be very excited.

calesta, what are the main differences between ported and sealed? i really cant tell the difference i guess....

ported is louder, has a more frequency curve (low bass). and takes less power to run.

alot of people claim the reponse is faster (eg. kick drum rock music) but to be honest, with todays subwoofer being so high tech there rally isnt that big of a difference. Especially if the box is tuned right. You can tune it to crazy low notes but be kind of soft on the mid bass (60hrtz ish) or you can be loud as hell at the middle but sounds like a queef when the low bass hits.

it all in the sub, amp, box tuning combo.

ported boxes are for getto blasters and punk ass kids if you want sound quality then a properly speced sealed box is the way to go. Go to a audio competion all the guys that compete in SPL (Noise) use ported boxes and the ones that comete in SQL (quality) use sealed boxes

yeah, as you can see my box is sealed, but not sized properly and genrally a ratty peice of junk. it needs to be replaced.

yeah, spec a box for me. i might build it for a fun experiment.

I find this amusing since the cone-radiator loudspeaker has remained virtually the same since pre-WWII, albeit with slightly more material choices and fanciful-looking designs.

Post a spec sheet for your driver with all the Thiele-Small parameters on it.

would have put my ported 10's against your setup any day. The frequency curve was practical flat all the way across board and still slammed on the low notes.

i honestly do not know what to make of this. This is beyond my knowledge. I havent gone back that far....
