So my friend recently purchased an VW Jetta Wolfsburg edition Turbo. We were talking about it and we wanna upgrade his turbo system and get some more power.

The point of this thread is that I have never dealt with a turbo before and we were wondering what might be the most efficient way to go about this?

It all started with him wanting to buy a blow-off valve, but is it even necessary? i figure it doesnt come with one because it wouldnt be of any advantage at this point? i dont believe his car has an intercooler either, so would that be the next step?

I just wanna talk about this with someone who knows something and im down for any ideas or suggestions! just let me know what you think.

Thanks.

Also i just figured i would say its not that i dont know ANYTHING about turbos, i have read about them and i have a basic understanding of the principles and how they work. But this will be my first time actually working with one.

up the turbo, push more psi, better cams, bore it out...possibilities are endless.

Personally, i'd up the turbo then take it for a tune.

Let the masses chime in now :)

"Up the turbo" isn't really very technical.

Do some research and find out if you can modify the wastegate to raise the pressure at which it engages. You might be able to get a few PSI out of it with very little effort.

The appropriate upgrade steps are dependent upon a few basic things: budget and mechanical ability. Without knowing those there isn't much anyone can recommend.

a few bolt ons and a chip will satisfy him at this point.

An intake will allow you to hear the operation of the diverter valve more and it'll 'sound' more like a blow off valve. Plus, FI motors respond well to mods. Even a mod as suttle(sp?) as a CAI.

Turbo back exhaust would help...

And the main thing I would do is chip it. APR, GIAC, etc... You can find more companies on vwvortex.com However, when you chip it, it's advised that you go with a blow off valve.

cam/s on turbo car = last on my list. It's the highest dollar/performance ratio.

Down pipe, exhaust, find out how much room the turbo has to go, my guess is it's good for a few more LBS. raise the psi and retune, that could net around 30-40-50-60WHP gain Maybe even more.

Thanks for all the help guys! i guess now we are gonna search for parts, anyone have any favorites or recommend any particular brand?

We are gonna be looking at chips and intakes. Im pretty sure he just wants to cut out his CAT for the exhaust situation. Is that smart? i would think he would need a better muffler too right?

I picked up over 30whp with my cams. :)

VS 100-200-300-400WHP with a different turbo?

Cams = last on my list of mods for turbo cars.

30WHP is a lot in the N/A world, but with boost, 30WHP is like .25-.5 PSI difference in my car.

So you can pick up 120whp from 1 PSI difference? ....

Depending on the turbo lol, 8PSI on one turbo to 9PSI on another turbo =)

Point being, cams = a lot of money, if you're turboed you have a lot more room to go before needing to get that extra 30WHP out.

My old B16 hit 570WHP with the stock cams.

Cams cost like $500, new turbo is close to $2,000.

Agreed, exhaust and a tune is where you should start. I guess it depends on the car regarding the cams. The evo responds well to cams after you've done everything else besides swapping the turbo.

I agree 100% with that, AFTER you do everything else.

The cost of the cam/s is not the issues its getting it installed. Most people can easily swap a turbo, insalling cams is a bit more touchy.

Another thing to keep in mind, cams can change a car all together, all depending on how far you want to go. Most people that sell modded cars remove the parts and sell it as stock. Cams add a whole new level of fun to that =)

mmm yes. a cam made my 4g15 FLY!

but on the same token, i had alot of supporting mods as well. at the end of the day, the cam made all the difference in the car itself.

1 hour to install cams in a 4G63T, tops. :)
