I thought I had my mind made up but now not sure again.

I'm taking my 93 Del Sol for a swap next week but don't know if I should do the GSR or Type R? Mainly undecided because in the future I will eventually (1 year or 2) drop a turbo in. I hear from both sides that it's better to go with the GSR for future turbo.

Others tell me that the Type R is a beast when beefed up!

Can the Type R perform well with a Turbo?

if you plan on turboing later down the road, just get the GSR .. its cheaper and better suited for boost

The cost difference between a GSR and Type R swap is apprx $1k. That's about what I'm going to spend to get the GSR to Type R NA status.

From what I've researched, a GSR lined up with a Type R NA (apples for apples) doesn't have a chance. So really, the GSR is only good if I turbo.

Do you see this to be the case??

All info is much appreciated!!

did you miss the part where we both just fucking told you its a shit idea???

you can put as much boost to it a B18C(5/R) you can afford to

but boosting a high compression engine requires a LOT more tuning, and has WAY less room for error... which means it costs a hell of a lot more fucking money

and if you want to build a B18C(5/R) for boost (still a shit idea) by the time you rip apart a type R engine to lower the compression, change the cams, build up the internals, etc etc etc... you wasted your fucking money buying the $1000-2000 more expensive type R... because you just ripped out every fucking thing that made it special in the first place and spent even more money replacing it all.... you also just destroyed one more type R engine that could have been put to better use by people who plan to stay all motor

in the end for less money the B18C(1/GSR) can make far more power, require less tuning, and be less likely to blow up at any given moment... and it can still be purpose built for boost, all while saving money over the type R engine, and in the end costing less

I've owned both motors. I know I am repeating things here... a gsr will be better for boost out of the box. However, the type r swap has an lsd transmission with better gearing. The type r also has a better flowing head and a decent intake manifold out of the box. I can tell you that stock to stock, the type r swap is much more rewarding to drive.

E SolSi...so the answer to the question was simply "yes." If you read carefully, I'm debating keeping it NA or boosting. I know you can go out on a limb and pay bocu bucks to upgrade a C5, believe me, I've done my research. What 99sidude is saying about driving the C5 is what I hear to be true. Simply, the one who's experienced both engines truly knows. My neighbor upgraded from a C5 to a Lexus twin turbo and swears that the C5 is the way to go. According to him, he recommends getting it boost ready with 9.7:1 forged CP pistons and Crower billet rods.....but like you said, it does cost a bit more, maybe a lot more. I guess it's just a matter of preference, and most improtantly, pockets!

My 93 goes under the knife on Weds. Still undecided. If anyone else has actually experienced both these engines, not just by what you've read, please chime in. Your input is very valuable.

Depends on goals and whatnot, everybody already stated what you need to know.

If your gonna stay N/A, take the type pirate (arrrr)
If your planning to boost down the road, any amount at all, then go gsr.

Both are fun to drive, sure the 9300rpm type r is crazy nuts the first time you hear it, but boost is as addictive as crack. It's all up to you now, kid.

Just wanted to let you know that I sealed the deal today. I decided to go with the GSR Turbo.

RoughKnight, I got sick and tired of google, youtube, mags...you name it. I notice its all a matter of opinion and fat pockets. Most people talk about what they read, and that info is much valuable, but I was hoping to find someone on this forum who has actually had hands on. But you hit the nail right on the head. I went with the GSR cause I know I'll get used to the hp on the C5. The C5 NA will top at 215hp (maybe some have hit a bit more), from what I've seen seen. The gearing on the C5 trans will also not work with my long term goals. The shop that's going to do my work says they can boost a C5, no problem, contrary to what most people think. He has a C5 there pulling 385+ hp, dyno in hand, but dude had spent 7 G's. My budget is 4.

The 93 goes in on Tues. Guaranteed 300whp. We'll see. Thanks guys.

E solsi is right!!! listen to him cause i have a b18c1. To turbo it, you have to tune it alot along with the type r and gsr!!!!! BOTH ENGINES will blow up if u boost!! You should just get a d16y5 spend nothing on rebuild. Yet you still have money to boost the shit out of it haha.. Yeah save the engine for a person like me who is running Naturally aspirated.

you make absolutely no sense.
