I recently bought a 91 crx si shell with no motor, axles, mounts, or transmissions. i did however pick up an si transmission and si axles. as for my motor, i would like a single cam vtec motor, and eventually bolt a turbo kit on to it. i'd prefer to get a motor with some kind of warranty on it, since my buddy has got screwed by craigslist motors. so basically, for my crx, which engine will handle the boost the best and throw down the most power? im also not looking to spend a crazy amount of money on the motor otherwise i would just do a b series.
so basically should i go D15B, D16Z6, or D16Y8?

ive done some searching around the thread and havent found much for the d15b in a crx. any thoughts?

I'd vote D16Z6. Slightly larger displacement than the D15B, better oiling system, stock, than the Y-series, "turbo" rod/piston kits available, etc. For warranties, best bet is through JDM retailers(ZC VTEC is similar to the D16Z6), though we have a local place here(I think their website is usedengines.com, aka Japan Direct), that offers warranties and also carry USDM engines.

D15B in a CRX is the same as D16Z6/D16Y8 into CRX.

ok thanks ill look into the Z6 then. the D15B caught my interest just cuz its on hmotors and ive heard good things about there engines.

d15b with 1.6 head for low comp then boost up. or just the 1.5 on 10 psi to be safe...

what is different about the wiring and ecu to convert to obd1?

Modified engine harness to connect to the motor and your shock tower plugs plus a jumper to (OBD0 to OBD1 conversion) at the ecu. The ECU connection is plug-n-play with the jumper but the engine harness is a labor of love (soder soder soder) or have a company like rywire do it for you ($$$) Plus you need to run VTEC to the ECU.

I say you sell the trans and axles and look for an LS swap......that turbo would be a nice set up in your EF. The LS alone would make the car much more fun to drive then any D series VTEC. The torque alone (bone stock all motor) will make you happy!! I dont think its a lot of money and you can rebuild one cheap. But it is more then just buying a D series and plugging it up to your existing trans/axles.

ok so lets say i go b series and pick up an ls motor. first of all, should i go with b18a or b18b? 2nd is it better to boost it or do ls/vtec? my buddy thats helping me with the swap knows a lot about turbos but i think hes gonna do a crvtec in his rex, so he would be knowledgable in either direction. i don't mean to get off topic, i've just been having a hard time deciding on one engine lol.

Depends on how you want the car to drive. I prefer naturally aspirated engines for their driveability and response, but boosted cars have tons of torque and are ridiculously fun in a straight line.

If you're going for hp/$, then boost the LS.

ok sounds legit im going for a budget build since im only in high school working part time. plus who doesnt love the sound of a turbo spoolin up ;)
