The next time you’re pulled over for speeding, you might be surprised by what you see in the rearview. Ford recently unveiled its replacement for the Crown-Victoria-based Police Interceptor -- and it’s a Taurus.

“Ford first introduced its police package in 1950 and today the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor is the industry leader,†explains Jalopnik. “The automaker's dominated the streets to the point that over the last five years, Ford's controlled more than 70% of the patrol cars sold. … Unfortunately, the Crown Vic's Panther-platform's getting a little long in the tooth — it hasn't seen a redesign in over 15 years.â€

So out goes the Crown Vic and in comes the Taurus. “To develop the all-new Police Interceptor, Ford engineers worked hand-in-hand with Ford’s Police Advisory Board of law enforcement professionals, which provided input on key vehicle attributes such as safety, performance, durability, driver comfort and functionality,†writes Ford.

While the new Police Interceptor is based on the 2010 Ford Taurus, the changes are significant.

According to Cars.com, “Police departments across the country won’t be piloting just any Taurus off dealership lots. Ford says approximately 90 percent of the interior has been redesigned for police use.†Unique features include front seats with anti-stab plates to protect officers from violent criminals and vinyl rear seats to make cleaning up after messy ones easier.

That’s not all. USA Today reports: “The Taurus-based model will keep the Police Interceptor name but offer just two 3.5-liter V-6 engines, no big V-8s, as in the Crown Vic. Ford boasts that the standard version will be 25% more fuel efficient than the current standard V-8. And the version with two turbochargers, what Ford calls EcoBoost, will deliver 365 horsepower, 115 more than the standard Crown Vic.†The 365-horsepower V6 is the same found in the performance-tuned Taurus SHO. An optional all-wheel drive system will also be available.

The result is a better-performing police car. “Ford’s new police car can endure a rear-end crash at 75 m.p.h., easily jump curbs and accelerate twice as fast as Ford's outgoing iconic Crown Victoria Police Interceptor,†says the Detroit Free Press.

However, the competition is tough. “The Taurus-based cop car will have to compete against the Dodge Charger cruiser, which looks good and is plenty fast with the available Hemi, and the Chevrolet Caprice, another rear-driver which is pretty much a Pontiac G8 in all but name (and civilian availability),†writes Edmunds.

Ford will cease production on the old Police Interceptor in late 2011 and begin introducing the new Taurus-based model in 2012.

Im not worried. The thing is still slow. And even slower with all that police crap thrown in lol. Looks a lot nicer than the Crown Victoria though. Picking out its headlight signature is going to be the problem.

Oh shit I didn't read to the end. They still make the "G8" BUT I CAN'T BUY THEM! I've gotta look for a pic.

just in time for the government to spend your tax dollars on shit we don't need from a company we don't like.

I say give them all Chargers and call it a day.

I use to be able to pick out the light patterns, now I just drive like an adult.

ford never took a bailout... the only problem i have with them is that they wont bring the cool shit they sell in europe over here (305hp Focus RS, 65+mpg diesel Fiesta, etc..)

yeah there are unmarked random cars all over in florida, you never know when a cop is around. but yeah i havent had a ticket in years, ever since i stopped driving like an asshole.

i said i don't like the company. i wasn't referring to bailout money. i just think they have gotten by making shit for cars and bad decisions on which cars to make.

they are making money by being the last company standing. that and the fact our government is going all out on a jdm smear campaign. but what can you do?

they should all have hybrids since they want to worry about greenhouse gasses and want strict emmission laws. thats where they should spend our tax dollars. then we can outrun them all night long

i personally think it should be like japan.

give them the most fuel efficient, cheapest car that will keep our officers safe. we dont' need high speed chases, 400hp chargers, and high tech bullshit. cops will ALWAYS be outgunned by the true criminals.

the last thing we need is to try and be like europe with BMW and Mercedes cop cars. Unless of course they are confiscated from drug dealers and other criminals.

pic no workie

but i think i know the picture. it's the crashed lambo on wet pavement right?

I have never understood how law enforcement has gone so long without a purpose built vehicle. I mean we dont just throw people into the back of panel vans do we? I understand that there are a helluva lot more cop cars on the road than meat wagons but still.

ive only really ran from the police once and it was on my motorcycle. the cop turned on his lights, i twisted the throttle and he just gave up and turned off his lights. didnt even try to chase me. these taurus' are pretty lame tho. whatever happened to cops getting those purpose built police cars?

:mad::mad: these remade cars are starting to piss me off. What fucking conversation are they having?
"Ohhh, I know, lets make over inflated retarded looking versions of our old cars that people loved because they were sleek fast and an instant classic!"
"Sir, that's the best idea we've heard in years, then again, these shit flinging monkeys we hired probably weren't the best candidates, but lets do it!"

My GF's dad had one of these as his GI car, and I literally could not fit my foot between the front of the back seat and the back of the front seat. I wear size 9 1/2 boots.

The full Monte:
