Home made guitar stand.

yeah, i got bored, and i need more guitar storage.
and im cheap so spending 60+ dollars on a guitar stand to hold 5 guitars was out of the question.
so far, i have spent $7. still need to get the foam to wrap it with ($1.50) and a can of spray paint ($3.00)
so, under 15.00 and i'll have a guitar stand to hold 5, and if needed has enough room to make 7 spots.

about halfway done. put two feet in the middle to support.

pretty much done. need to cut the 5 pieces to come out along the top (going to do it with a miter saw to make sure i get straight cuts). and wrap in foam and paint.
most likely going to get a small pack of little screws to just put in the joints with the most strain on them to ensure they dont move.

thats about it. yay.

Looks good. My brother welded up a stand for his girlfriends violin the other day. Stuff like this makes for a good story. Hell maybe some friends of yours would want you to make them something like that for a few bucks.

i wish i had a welder, i could have made one almost exactly what you would buy in a store.
but, i would love to make some wall mounts, but the new place im moving into is a brand new apartment and im sure the guy wouldnt love me putting that many holes in his walls. so i made this.

nice work. ive been meaning to make a few wall brackets for my parker fly. stupid carbon fiber headstock doesnt fit in any wall mounts that you can buy so i think i have to mount it horizontally.

You set the base between the two base pipes and the neck between the T joints. Is it for acoustics? Random electric guitar shapes might not sit well.

Oh, and Id stick some more pipe in the T Joints. It'll give the neck something to support it NINJA.

its going to hold which ever of my guitars im using the most really.
i dont have any funky shaped ones, just the regular strat style bodies really.
acoustics, electrics, and bass.
i dont really like the bodies of the uber-metal guitars that make your eyes bleed just by looking at them.
i enjoy the tones, but i like the RG ibanez etc.

and when i get the foam around the pvc, i'll be able to set some guitars on there and test the stability. like i said, im going to use some screws in some of the joints to keep them from rotating and what not.
if i feel it needs more support im going to put an "L" on the front to connect the top to the front bottom.
we'll know in a day or so. lol.

dont worry, i already found a very quick, easy, and cheap way to make a guitar stand for the xiphos:

B, you're supposed to pay a hooker to just hold your Xiphos all day (that's what she said).


And that pvc is probably only sturdy enough to hold more plastic, i'd much sooner make a stand like that out of wood and make it look decent in the house.

PVC glue them all together, thats what its for!! Forget screws.

Also, You're probably going to want to weight the bottom somehow.. I don't see that standing up to the weight of several guitars and being stable, and the last thing you want is 5 guitars laying in a tangled pile with eachother. You might have been better off spending the $60 for the sake of the guitars...

i was going to glue them, but i want the option of being able to take it apart easily.

with the guitars on there, most of the weight will be at the bottom.
im fairly confident enough that it will be fine.
if i turn out to be wrong, oh well, im only out a little over 10 bucks. but still worth it to have something to do for a little while.

plus, i would trust screws in there a little more than glue. im sure it holds under most situations, but a nice little metal pin to keep from twisting is sounding better to me.
im not worried about it tipping over or just collapsing, more worried about the T that joins the top to the bottom twisting when the guitars are leaning in. so a screw should do that nicely.

i have seen these done before, they work fine.
and like i said, if im not 100% confident, then i'll scratch it and find another use for the material.

You trust screws more than the PVC adhesive used in modern day construction throughout the entire world? You obviously do not have any knowledge with the materials you work with. The PVC cement actually forms a chemical bond between PVC components within seconds of contact. If plumbers trust it enough for sewer and water lines in your walls then I think you are safe. I would recommend NOT using screws if you are putting guitars of any value on this rack. If you wanted something that came apart easily you could have looked into galvanized conduit that has connectors with screw in clams to hold it together.

What size PVC are you using? I hope it is no less than 1 inch tubing. Anything less than that and I would be worried that it woudl be strong enough to hold your guitars.

PVC adhesive is ridiculously strong. It's not like "regular" glue at all; if you make a mistake and let it cure then you pretty much have to cut that piece of piping off.

Thumbscrews would be nice; able to break it down if needed(like moving or traveling), or even implement something to keep the guitars from falling over in case the stand gets bumped of something.

It will hold. All the weight will be centered and at the bottom. Physics FTW

like i said, i dont have much concern with the thing falling over.
most of the weight in a guitar is in the body, the body will be sitting on the bottom, adding weight to it. the top will only have a small bit of weight on it from the leaning necks, not much weight at all.

and i do trust that the pvc glue is uber strong. the issue is, i move a lot, and having something that can be taken apart without the use of a saw is a very big advantage to me.

this thing will just be in my apartment, sitting against the wall. not taking it out gigging, or anything strenuous.


in the picture below, the two points circled with arrows pointing to them, those are the only joints that cause any concern, im only worried that with the guitars leaned, it will twist, thereby causing the top to swivel down, resulting in a pile of guitars on my floor. i figure a screw would ease this.

or, if i feel it needs more support for the top i will add the green lines. which will do a lot for it.

dont worry, i got this.

just thought it would be an interesting time waster and if it worked out, then awesome. if not, then i'll make some flutes or something i dunno.
