what is luxury

I just don't see the people rich enough to afford it being willing to purchase a car from a Hyundai dealer. Maybe I'm wrong. It looks like a very nice car, but they should have made a sub-brand with a classy name ala Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti.

Sub brands are a waste of funds. Especially when you want to build your current companies reputation. Example: Chevrolet-GMC.

I don't agree (with klyph)- sub-brands are really only needed in the US where people are so brand-crazy. That's one of the reasons why Mercedes/BMW don't sell their small cars here- image. I think today's consumer is a bit smarter- everyone knows now that Lexus = Toyota, Infiniti = Nissan, Acura = Honda. Perceptions will change over time. Hell, the Japanese premium brands has to start somewhere too.

I like the video. I think Hyundai should give this guy a free car for his efforts too. It's good 10 minute+ advertising that they didn't have to pay for. ;)

Well that's because, Chevy-GMC, there is no difference. Back in 1991 no one would have bought a $29-45k Honda Legend. Say its luxury and change the name people will buy it. Its fucking stupid. I hate it too, but that's just how people are. Most people still don't know a Lexus is a Toyota, Acura is a Honda, etc. It's been 20 years, people are still stupid enough.

:shrug2:

Ok. Honestly, most people WILL still read reviews of anything before they walk into a dealership and buy. We ARE in the information age now. Consumer Reports, Car & Driver, Motor Trend etc will review the car and if it does well, more people will buy. Word gets out about a quality product, and if this is one of them (I'm sure it will be), then Hyundai will sell a ton of them.

Korax:That's got some truth but I don't think that fits Hyundai's gameplan. They've already turned some heads with the Genesis and newer sedans. So bringing out more successful luxury models under their current nameplate doesn't seem to be out of reach. Also, though they put out a lot of shitty cars over the years I don't think they ever carried the stigma of being totally worthless shitboxes to a broad enough spectrum of the general buying public to necessitate a sub brand with a "clean slate."

Cal I think you overestimate the intelligence of the average consumer. That being said, consumers of $60K cars should average higher on the intelligence scale, but not necessarily.

Great car, and great value. But the kind of people looking to buy a 4-door luxury sedan will most likely care very much about what badge is on their car. Americans are very brand sensitive. The Genesis 4-door is a great car, but I can honestly say I've seen MAYBE 5 driving around that weren't at car lots.

seen quite a few more than that driving around south florida. the hyundais seem to be gaining popularity.

Funny as hell, it looks decent sitting alone.. but you put it next to that mercedes and it suddenly looked like a chunked together piece of crap.

And the interior sucks, look at the fit and finish.. Check out the door handles, etc.

My biggest beef with cheaper cars is the build quality/fit and finish.

I've never had an American car or lower end Japanese car close a door like a Germen car, anyone whos driven a BMW or Benz should know what I'm talking about. It's SOLID has a sound as if its perfectly sealed. Then everything is super tight on the inside from having no play in the panels, a super solid dash and buttons rather then switches.

Everything in my trailblazer and 350Z are long swing switches or rotating nobs from the windows to the AC controls, everything feels cheap. The benz, every button is a button, soft with next to no movement, it reminds me of a higher end cellphone with soft buttons like the droid keyboard

I would really like to get my hands on a fully loaded Genesis. However I have a feeling its going to be like my LTZ Trailblazer. Options out the ass but nothings done fully right and everything feels.... cheap.

If you're coming from a civic or another lower end car, no doubt the Genesis is going to be awesome. However for people who understand luxury cars, I'd be very surprised if it stacked up well.

As to honda/acura toyota/lexus yes same companies but no way are they the same car, the biggest difference is almost every Acura and I believe every Lexus is built in JAPAN. unlike the lower end models that are made in America or other places.

On the flip side you have companies like GM and Ford that have their own luxury brands and just so happen to get built in the same places by the same people that make the lower end models and oh boy does it show. No doubt they're better but they still are not on pair with the Japanese or Germans.

ya the handles look like a plastic chrome version of something you'd see in a 93 civic.

yup, thats the problem with my Traillblazer, it's a bunch of little things that just add up. save a few bucks here and there and in the end you have a great idea with a nice cheapness to it.

I guess I have a little more faith in the intelligence of the average American. If people don't pay attention to reviews of things or other people's feedback- then why do the car companies care to make themselves better? Just advertise more.

I just found this out recently , but then again I never really paid attention

Really? I would have thought that the G20/Sentra, I30/Maxima, QX4/Pathfinder and G35/350Z were dead giveaways throughout the years.

I suppose- but those same things can be said for Hondas build in the US vs GM products built in the US- there is a HUGE different in build quality by changing the actual company making the product. It's all about training, engineering and how you manage the workforce, not just the country things are coming from.

Exactly. McDonalds food sucks. Coca-Cola rots your guts. Nike products are mediocre at best from a performance standpoint.

Americans buy what they recognize. If advertising didn't work, companies would use their multi million dollar ad campaigns to make better products.

My Acura TL (US Built) had the standard rattles and such that for some reason the TSX (JP built car) didn't have.... other people had issues with saggy head liners and other small stuff. Where the TSX somehow managed to avoid those flaws.

weird how that works.
