We have an existing customer that purchased a larger building down south, and I did all the wiring yada yada. Well the swing rack they bought was 3 foot wide by 4 foot tall by 4 foot long.

I had mounted the phone system at the very top of the rack, and put the connecting cords on two 32 port patch panels just below it. Everything went just fine.

Today I went down to start working on putting all the wiring on it. I get everything set up, a knife, diagonal cutters, punch tool, my DP and I have my zune blaring some Tool. :D

The first f'ing cat 3 I punched down I got half way through it and the entire goddamn swing rack comes flying off the wall mount. I'm talking the 20 pound swing portion, the 10 pound phone system. Everything.

Sitting up on the ladder I magically managed to grab it as it went down with my left hand, got a good hold on it but the system being on the top made it top heavy, so it kept going until I grabbed it with my right arm and kept it from going down. In the process it swung backwards and the bottom swung out from me. It pulled me down off the ladder, landing on my feet and finally getting it balanced enough to keep it from going any further.

I managed to save it, only problem is when the bottom swung out it stuck my wrist in between the swing mount, the phone system and the patch panels so I twisted the shit out of my wrist and scraped up my palm.

What a great way to start a damn weekend. lol

Here's some of what I got accomplished today at least, after I took these pictures I managed to get the blue cat5's about 1/3rd of the way done, then I couldn't take bending my wrist anymore to push them into the mounts to punch them down so I called it quits for today.

I was the asshole that mounted it, and the pins were in there solid. lol There are two lips that extend out past the top and bottom of the racks that WERE welded on, but not very well, they popped out which is why it fell.

damn james. those things are no fun! i usually put a screw in them every 5 holes.

I'm sorry the way those cat 5s are ran, looks kinda of... unprofessional... no offense?

Yeah I have never been a fan of swing racks. They build the cheaper ones so it can swing out either way. I won't be swinging it out to the left side anymore, thats the side that broke.

It's not done yet... the patch panel is on backwards. Once everything is punched down it'll flip around so all the wiring will be tucked in neatly behind the system and panels where you can't see it.

This is the main problem I have as a data/com guy, customers want it neat. I can't make it neat while I'm doing it. I need some room to work. When it's done it'll look a lot better.

Yeah i know your pain. I was an apprentice for a commercial electrical company for a year and half and Ive seen the bull shit when it comes to making wires "neat."

i should take a picture of the "professional work" in my server closet
fucking hacks

How big is this server room? Like several 96 port patch panels?

Sometimes there's no choice really. If we pick up a new client we'll work around it and make our new stuff neat, but if they spend the money on redoing it, we'll redo everything the right way.

Some of our closets here look like ass as well. Its gotten a lot better. But still

I'm going to get started on rewiring my house, I have a 24 port patch panel somewhere, and the small swing rack through our supplier is only 26 bucks, I'll have to pick one up and show the process on which we do our wiring and terminating from my house.

This look a little better for ya 94H_Ex? I finally was able to finish getting everything punched in and swung the patch panel around.

Thank you, it was quite the pain in the wrist which still hurts. I think I have a hairline fracture somewhere.

Part of that sucked because the pre-existing wires were too short to punch down until I turned the panel around, which means I had to crawl inside of the rack to punch them down. At least I had music. :)
